I wish to know whether 1 100 watt light will be brighter then 2 60 watt bulbs put side by side.
Issue is our old basement needs cleaning and my wife wants 100 watt bulbs put in but I hate them things because too much heat to rise to the fixture and it sort of cooks the bulb and they are hard to come out.
I went and got those spliters that split the bulb into 2 about 45 degree away from each other.
I figure the heat will be disappated away beter and not just at the light fixture.
I got to wondering if it will give twice the light.
I think so.

Wife is always right. Or you can sleep in the basement.

Put a dab of Never-seize on the bulb. That'll stop the sticking. Vasilene works on those rubber socketed bulbs too.

Our basement is kind of short, I'm 6' and I can't walk everywhere in it without ducking. I've gotten tired of hitting my head on lights and breaking lightbulbs (DANGER DANGER DANGER) so I'm replacing the fixtures with fully enclosed flourescents. Long bulb life, low temp, lower profile. Should be a good fit for what we need.

I think you might be surprised that 1 lumen and 1 lumen might actually add up to more like 2.09 lumens or something like that. When using our photo studio lights, if you set both lights independently for f/8, when you fire them both at the same time, you end up with f/8.5. We have CF bulbs in our celing fan because it's 15 feet up, other than that I just don't like the light temperature coming from them.

Thats interesting.
My wife wants light like the good old incadesant 100 s while she is down there.
I did the project with a spliter and 2 60s and it lights up nice. In a couple areas I put 100's in the corners.
My 12 year old then asked me if shinny objects make more light.
Made me think for a moment and then I said no. Just because you cant make stuff like light. Only transform it to something a bit more advantage to the project.
Sounds like you should know lighting.
I think I will put the odd mirror down there as well and see if it has the illusion of more light.
Thanks

A mirror doesn't make more light but it makes light more directed. Same with a lens, the headlamps in your car are mirrored on one side to redirect that light forward so less is wasted. The lens then directs it into the pattern we use to see the road.

One advantage of two bulbs: If one bulb burns out, you're not in the dark.

Using the fluorescent in my trouble light helped eliminate that sizzle when it falls on my forearms.

Yes Frankie lumes are 'additive' as you put it. If your 60 watt bulbs put out 520 lumes then 2 will give 1040 lumes of light for the 120 watts used. While your 100 watt bulb puts out 1500 lumes for the 100 watts used. I suspect the heat given off by 1 100 watt bulb is less than that given off by 2 60s but I couldn't swear to that. As others have said the lumes seem to vary quite a bit for one brand to another. I use some compact flourscents in lamps that stay on a lot but don't like them much. I don't like the color, that slight time they take to come on, the time it takes to warm to full brightness and I don't find they last nearly as long as they claim but then maybe it's the brands I use. And lets not forget they are expensive up front and don't fit all fixtures.

That is what I was after.
I have a box full of 60 watt incandescent and some 100 watt incandescent so I might as well use them for this short time my wife is in the basement.
She wants good light in that dark and dinghy basement and she wants a good old 100 watt bulbs.
BUT
The fixtures are cheap plastic so the heat from a 100 watt goes straight up and sort of burns them. I am amazed that those things are legal.
Anyhow
I figure that those dividers place the heat more spread out because there are now 60 watts sort of on their sides and they are not directly below the fixture.
And I also agree that a Lumen and a Lumen should equal 2 Lumen

I"m sure 2 60s using a splitter do spread out the heat but w/o knowing what kind of fixture your using it in I can"t really comment. Many fixtures say 60W max and I assume heat is the issue. If yours is like that maybe you better stick with 60. There"s too many ifs for me to comment on how the heat would impact your situation. As you know a 100 gives off more heat than a 60. But a 100 would give off less than 2 60s.

Every thing that I have been hearing and reading recently says that 95 percent of the energy used to light an incandesent bulb is wasted.

I waste enough money myself. So I have changed almost every light with the flouresent.

Your numbers are a bit high. For and incandescent it is more like 40-60% is wasted as heat.

according to the Dept. of Energy, only 10 percent of the energy used in an incandescent bulb gives off light.

Here is a quote from another site I found;

The basic idea behind these bulbs is simple. Electricity runs through the filament. Because the filament is so thin, it offers a good bit of resistance to the electricity, and this resistance turns electrical energy into heat. The heat is enough to make the filament white hot, and the "white" part is light. The filament glows because of the heat -- it incandesces.

I know that is pretty basic, and we all probably understand that statement. But seeing it in print helped me realize that it was possible.

When I first heard 90 to 95 percent in lost energy, I thought that was too high a number. But everything I find supports this.

We put 13 watt floresant bulbs in our house lights, they are about like a 70 watt regular bulb.A 20 watt floresant will put out more light than a 100 watt bulb and not get hot,and use a lot less electric.I wouldn't have regular bulbs
anymore.

If you spread the output by installing 2 bulbs rather than 1 large one you will get better coverage. Frankly I use the compact flourescent bulbs wherever I can. I have them all over the house and I use 9 of them in my pole barn. 900 watts of light output for the cost of 220. I also have them on my 1/4 mile driveway and use 6 of them there. When I bought these bulbs 7 years ago they were really expensive. Not so bad today though.

Bill Clinton gave a speech the other day about greenhouse gasses and he quoted a statistic that claimed if we were to eliminate all incandescent lighting used in the US and go with CF bulbs we could shut down 80 power plants. Gives you some perspective about how much energy is wasted by generating heat in incandescent bulbs.

Are Lumens additive??? in reply to frankiee, 07-10-2007 09:20:50
So I have 100 watt bulb that puts our 1500 Lumens
I have 60 watt bulbs that put out 520 lumens
If I light 2 6 watt bulbs together in the same place, do I get 1040 Lumens of light???
Are Lumens additive????

My self I would go with the news small flosecent type bulbs. #1 very little heat #2 costs about half as much $$ the light them up. #3 you could put in 2 100 watt ones and use less power then one 100 watt or the 2 60 watt bulbs so then you will have the best of both worlds

My experience could be "old" since I tried those compact flourescents about 4 years ago before they were popular.

Didn't like them for reading. Ok, can use a regular bulb in table lamps.

The spectrum they put off...I kept not seeing stains on dress shirts before going to the office. Replace the bulbs back to incandescents, voila I'm seeing the stains againg before I'm in public. I really like the Phillips blue tints :)

When a light burned out in the garage, figured that would be the perfect place to start using my stock of unused flourescents I had pulled out of the house. Nope, soon as the light goes on my radio whether listening to Rush on AM or NPR on FM starts to hiss and pop too much to stand.

Only place I might use them now would be in seldom used room or stairwell...but for how often they'd be used there, they'd never pay back their cost.

Great idea, but I just didn't like them :(

You've got bad bulbs, or maybe bad wiring. I've got almost all the bulbs in the house switched to CF and have none of those troubles.
One of the bulbs is a Phillips I paid $20 8 years ago before they were real popular. I moved it from my apartment when we moved into the house.
One big thing on bulb life is that CFs don't like to be base up, keep 'em pointed upright and they last alot longer.

In my house about 75% of my bulbs are the new money savers. Never had any problems with them in any way. I even use them in my horse bard and chicken houses where the lights are on 24/7. They last a lot longer and do a good job, but these are also the new one as in most less then a year old

Check the box for the # of lumens for a given wattage. all are not the same. I use 130 volt bulbs for fixtures that are hard to change as they last 4-5 times as long as a 120 volt bulb.
The trade off is that a 130 volt bulb run on 120 volts had a cooler filiment temperature which leads to long life but produces about 20% less light than a 120 volt light of the same watts.
Also on 130 volt bulbs, the box will list the light output in lumens and the power draw in watts for a given voltage. Make sure your looking at the specs for the voltage you intend to run the bulb on, as they will be quite a bit different. If you want long life, low power drain and low heat, how about installing CF lights. The same amount of light with 1/4 the power draw and heat.

If using incandescent lamps. The clear versions give a sharper, whiter, brighter light. Lumen output and colour temperature will vary with the lamps voltage rating and the actual applied voltage.

Two 60s would use more power than the 100. How about the little florescent bulbs. They are cheap and very bright. Popular Science or Popular Mechanics just did a big test artical a couple of months ago as to the best color and output. Look it up at the library or search the web. jeffcat
