OT: Wood Floor Water Stains

Recently bought a house and was doing some renovations. Pulled up the carpet and found wooden flooring which I consider good news. One problem is water from people leaving the bathroom shower must have got the carpet wet and it left water stains on the hallway flooring. Sanded the flooring and the stains seemed to deeper than surface stains. Any suggestions on removing these stains....a grey color on the wood.

Twenty-five years ago I ran into the same situation, this time with residues left by incontinent house plants, dogs and some dimwit who stapled underlay to pristine hardwood flooring.

Flood produced a blue product called deck cleaner or some such. It took care of some of the staining. Javex is harsher, but reduced the stains a bit more.

If oxalic acid and Javex don't work, you'll have to figure out a way to turn the blemish into a design feature. "When I started on this hall the floor was black with stains and mildew! Mildred and I scraped our knuckles raw with pieces of broken glass, and then we scrubbed it for a week with Javex, and these few marks are all that's left. We kept them as a reminder." Or something like that. GRIN

There are various concoctions marketed as "wood bleach", "deck cleaner" or "teak cleaner". Most use oxalic acid as their active ingredient.

You can also take the opposite approach and stain the wood a dark enough color to hide the stains.

Multiple bleach applications might help. It worked for a piece of furniture I had done by a young refinisher that he wanted to prove that it could be done.It still looks great after 50 years.CENTAUR

Bleach...but you"ll have to do the whole hall and restain.
