Lost a local Farmer

The local farming business here in up state New York has lost another Farmer when his Bull crushed him to death when he went in to check on some heifers the bull was breeding. It happened two days ago.

NEsota - The bull was a Jersey bull and I have heard now that the farmer"s wife and a farm hand were injured when they went in to help get the bull out ot the way to help the owner. The owner was knocked down hit his head on the concrete floor and that fall was the fataly blow.

I knew the man for years and I believe the story is very true. He went to the barn to get his gun but he did not have any shells.

What bred of bull was this that killed the NY farmer? My experience has been with Hereford and Angus bulls. They usually are quite dossal but I realize dairy and some of the more recent European imports are more aggressive.

This story was told to me a almost 60 years ago by the man it happened to. He had a cow that was not that a good a milker and did not drive well with the other cows so decided to sell her. Before he got her hauled off he went into the pen for something and his bull knocked him down, and then would hit him again every time he tried to get up. After a little while the cow he was going to sell walked in between him and the bull, after the farmer got to his feet the cow walked over to the fence. The bull was sold the cow stayed.

Many years ago, there was a farmer in the county who ran a dairy operation. He had his prize bull at the county fair one fall....biggest Holstein I ever saw....it weighed 2800 pounds and I couldn't see over it's back and I'm 6 ft. Not long after that Mr. Bull pinned the farmers grandson against the stall, broke his leg and pelvis....he was about 25 at the time. Had he been alone, the bull would have killed him...he was mashing the air out of him. The bull was converted to about 1500 pounds of hamburger shortly thereafter. So, they go buy another super-dooper Holstein bull...it got the old man down and damn near killed him. After that...no more bulls, they went to artificial insemination. I wouldn't have a bull on the place. If the cow wouldn't 'take' when AI'd, she'd be culled.

I have a brother in upstate and fine land up there. This is tragic about that guy. That bull killed his best friend and didn't even know it.Dang!

you have to watch those damn bulls. i have 1 with my cows. i told tall kid under No circumstances is he to go in pasture unless he takes a tractor or pickup truck. that bull can run 5 times faster than you. neighbor said his has to go the darn guy snuck up behind him when neighbor was digging fish worms.
