Kohler 10 hp cant get spark

I have a Lincoln Welder with a K241. I cannot get spark from the coil. I have tried two diff coils, changed the plug wire, changed plug, checked and rechecked the wires to the points, set points from 15 to 22 thou, changed condenser, still no fire. this has the little coil under the flywheel, no battery, pull rope. I am going to wear the flywheel out pulling it from the shaft. What else could it be? this thing has almost ate my lunch.

I have fixed the no spark on several small engines by doing a good job of cleaning the points. These engines do not spark enough to burn the points so they get a film on them that insulates the points from each other. A real easy thing to try first.

Beware the woodruff key! That controls the magnet position as it spins past the mageto coil. If the key is partially sheared, the maget will not be in the right position when the points move, and there will be no magnetic field moving through the coil, so no spark.

It takes very little damage to the key to throw the flywheel position off enough to no longer make a spark.

1st thing to do on any mag ignition small engine is to toss the points/capacitor and install one of those Nova II or Mega-Fire units made by Sten's. $15.00 or so. Rust on any of the magnetic surfaces has to be brushed off. The gap between the flywheel & the stationary pole piece of the coil has to be as close as possible without rubbing. Sometimes the high tension wire from the coil gets battered/stretched over the years and develops an internal open/gap. Also toss any Champion plug or any resistor plug as far as possible. Use an Autolite 216,437 or a MP4316. They are a economical priced, high quality platinum plug. A small engine mag isn't a MSD-7 ignition system. Plug gaps of 15 to 30 thou is it.

One other thing to check, assuming the magnets are still good, is the spacing between the coil armature and the flywheel magnets. On some engines (not sure about Kohler) the mounting holes are elongated to allow adjustment of the position. As close as you can get without rubbing is better.

I had the same problem with a Kohler, K181. Ended up replacing the flywheel, the magnets no longer had sufficient magnetism to create the energy for the coil. There is a test where you hang a screwdriver about an inch from the magnets. If they are good, they'll pull the screwdriver to them. Mine failed this test, but I had already tried 2 coils, new points, condensor, wires, sparkplug ,etc...

Was a odd thing, as the machine ran great one week, the next week it wouldn't run at all.

that sounds like mine too. ran great one minute then just QUIT. Now i done spent many dollars on it and nada. I have in the past put new rings in it. I know the engine is sound. A old guy here in town ground the valves. He would grind on them and hone the seat. Then hold down the valve in the seat, spray carb cleaner around the seat and blow air in the exhaust (for the exhaust valve) and into the intake (for intake valve). If he saw the carb cleaner bubbling, he would take the valve out and grind on it some more. He is a perfectionist and a super mechanic. Anyway all that to say I know my trouble is in the ign. If you put one of those inline spark plug test lites to ground, it will spark JUST A LITTLE but not enough to make a spark on a plug I don't believe. I thought about putting a coil on it but that is another battery to maintain and I just don't run this little machine enough to justify. Where in heck would I find a flywheel for it? I bet it would cost a arm and two legs. Kohler engines on eBay bring a pretty penny and that is a dead/alive gamble.

If it has a magnent imbedded in the flywheel sand off any rust on it. Also sand off the two coil irons that the magnent passes. If it were mine, I would convert it over to a breakerless ignition.
