Is there a way, to thin out Pipe Sealing Compound (Pipe Dope)? Mine is so thick it is difficult to work with. Or, when it gets to this state, just buy new.

I prefer silicone sealers, like auto gasket makers, etc. Seals better, and reduces rust and freezing up so you MIGHT be able to get it apart in a few years!

Smell the stuff, does it smell like rancid vegetable oil? Most paste pipe compound uses veg oil so it is safe in water lines. Mix a little canola oil in it and stir. After you get it thinned with oil, stir it every few weeks/months. The heavy pipe dope sinks and oil comes to the top, you fill the brush with stuff from the top that is mostly oil. Soon the oil is almost gone and the dope gets thick. Same thing happens to anti seize compound.
