A few of my friends used to come down and we would go up on the hill and shot clay birds . Hav`nt done it in a while , just no time I guess . Never did like all the plastic wads laying all over the pasture . We would try picking them up but ya cant find them all and I picked one up yesterday . Was wandering if anyone is making shells with paper wads like the used to , or any other biodegradable material ?

Kent Cartridge Company makes non-toxic loads for 12 and 20. 12 gauge is 1290 fps, 1 oz of #7. It's a target load, steel shot, photodegradable wad. I seem to miss the pigeons just as well with them as with regular loads. UPS driver dropped off two cases and I don't think there was a delivery charge. About $7 or $8 a box if I remember. I don't know what a photodegradable wad will do in a cow's gut.

I also use the white flyer biodegradable pigeons. 2 year breakdown time. The bio pigeons are supposed affect the PH of the soil if you shoot enough. I dont' remember if PH goes up or down.

I load my own with felt and paper wads.Check with Ballistic Products co for plastic wads that will break down.

Go to Cabellas and tell them you want paper wad shotgun shells - they have them for a price. The shells are much lower powered then "conventional" shells because they are specifically designed for use in the old damascus barreled shotguns.

Damascus barrels can not stand the pressures from todays smokeless powders. I would be carefull about telling someone to use new shells in a damascus barrel.

That is why you buy the ones designed for use in damascus barrels. They are not a standard powder load and use a paper wad to keep barrel pressures low.

Some cheaper shells use a fiber base wad but I think they still use a plastic shot wrapper.

I remember reading (or hearing) that the paper wads can get loose or damp in humid weather. And that is why plastic is used. (I could be wrong here) Somebody will correct me if I am.

Never heard about the humidity thing. The main reason is for the incorporated shot cup. protects the choke in the barrell, and less deformed shot, for better patterns and ballistics. Especially for the steel shot now being forced to use. LE
