OT: propane advise

I am looking to buy or rent a propane tank for my new house and was wondering what others experiences are with the leasing of a tank. Also, what size tank would be right for a large house in Minnesota? I am new to propane, other than what"s conected to my grill, so pretty much all comments are welcome. Thanks in advance, Dennis.

First find out what companies are in your area and which of them will deliver to your location. Unlike natural gas there are no clear service areas. Not all companies in the area will deliver to your location as it may be outside a certain distance. 500 gallon tanks are pretty much standard here in southwest MN for rentals. Do see some 1000 gallon but not too many. If looking to purchase a tank, plan on $1 - $2 per gallon capacity as cost. And if something happens to the owned tank it is your problem. Payment for the fuel has 3 options I know of: pay as you receive, contract for X amount of gallons (prepay) or some companies offer budget plan where you pay a set amount every month. Delivery can be set up on either an as needed basis ( you're responsible to check the level) or automatically each month on some given day. Also check cost of what each company will be charging for installing the tank and most likely the lines to the house and the annual inspection fee if any. Most propane companies in MN have become more careful these days in their inspection of systems after the incident in Lake Wilson a few years back.

Here in northern Wisconsin all of the propane companies that I have seen provide their customers with the propane tank free of charge. They also set up the tank and provide a discount for the first fill. You are, however, locked in to buying your propane only from them. You absolutly have to get a dealer that offers a prepay plan. When they give you the prepay price ask around to see what price other people are getting locked in at. If others are getting a better price I have been able to tell my dealer at which point they have always given me the lower price. Keep in mind that people who are burning a lot of propane will probably get a better price than those who don't burn as much. The key is to shop around.

I own my tank 500g. that way I'm not locked into buying any one company's propane if they decide to raise there rates and as a rule it costs me $.10 less a gallon to purchase the propane because I do own my tank.HTH

I rent a tank in west central MN. It is 500 which holds 400 when filled to 80%. It will about make the winter in a 1400 square foot ranch style. If I was to do it over I would buy a 1000 gallon. It seems that the rent gets more each year and if you own it you can buy from any supplier not just the one that you rent from. Bud

I own my tank. It is a 500 Gal capacity. I bought it about 4 yrs ago and it was one of my best moves. It am not held hostage by a price or a company. I am here in Michigan. I can search and look for the best price and I do. Generally speaking, I can buy propane for about .20 to .25 a gallon less, than the people on the lease programs.
