Sears mower model problems

I have a 6-7 year old Sears riding lawn mower. Works good, but to the age it needs a few parts now & then.

Sears is all about using the model number to look up parts.

So: It seems Sears has no knowledge of my lawn mower. The model number is either mis-identified (belt look-up gives me the wrong belts) or not found (couldn't get an idler wheel several years ago - just grabbed one because they are all the same...). Now I need a steering arm, and local store got to the point the corporate offices should have called me by today with an answer - but no call yet.

I have the standard 42" deck, Kohler engine, and can't get parts..... And a lawn that is getting kinda tall.....

Anyone else run into this with Sears?

Sears riding mowers, with few exceptions, are made by American Yard Products, same as poulan & Husqvarna. Find parts for them on the internet, same parts will be cheaper. Knock off the first three didgets of the Sears model number to get the American Yard Products (AYP) Number. Sears don't make anything but catalogues and money,

If you can't find any parts for the mower you could try --OUTDOOR DISTRIBUTORS.COM or call at
Toll free 1 -877-70parts. I have found odd parts and they do stock parts that fit Sears.

I have a Craftsman mower that is going on 15 years old and I can still get parts. I usually go online and order them...see the link below. Did your mower come with a user manual / parts manual? They should be able to cross-reference some of the part numbers off your tractor to get your model number.

Good luck.

Been there, done that.

I have the model number. Clear as abell, nice big type, no smudged numbers at all.

At the parts web site, enter the model #, gives me a list of _one_ mower to choose from, I click it (I believe the hp is wrong it's not accounting for the Kohler engine....) and it tells me the mower basically does not exist, has no parts available at all.

No other options. Sears relies upon this as the way to get parts, nothing stamped on my broken part, so can't cross-reference or look up anything..... (I had to make THREE trips to get the right deck belt a month ago, because they ignored my belt numbers I sent with the wife & just used the machine model #, which gives the wrong belt on their little compu-look-up.)

Took the number to the local store, he spent 10 minutes on the 'net, and 25 minutes calling various corporate numbers. No one can find my model number.

I own a mower that does not exsist I guess?

(I will get more persuasive & I will find the arm I need - farming this many years I can figure out parts; but this issue keeps coming up, requires 3 trips by me for what is supposed to be a simple thing - I am tired of this....)

Thanks for relpying, I'm just venting a little, person buys something with the idea one can find parts for it, & then this bites.... :)

Paul,
I must have a similar mower to yours. Mine has a 42" deck, but it has the Briggs engine. I'd rather have the Kohler, though. Mine's about the same age, and I have a lot of slack in the steering. I looked in my parts book, and it doesn't list a steering arm. There's a drag link (#169832) and a tie rod (130465). If you can describe where that steering arm is, I'll look up the number for you.
Butch

Goes from the bottom of the steering column, to the front wheel. Rather bent up rod with a ball pressed into each end of it.

(Ball popped out, wouldn't pop back in....)

Paul,

I have the exact same issue - the arm from the steering column on my Craftsman 42" mower has a hole at the end where it attaches to a ball on the assembly of the fron left tire (this arm steers the wheel). The arm has popped off that ball, and I cannot get it to stay on. Calls to Sears bring up references to the same diagram you are talking about that does not show this part - they have no other information for me - did you ever figure out how to locate parts to correct this?

Paul, Take the steering rod off and get two new hiem joints, and thread steering rod to fit and re install, will be a better product when you get through. Jack
