pouring a post before a rain?

Hello, I hope all is well. I wanted to cement posts in the ground for a small deck I'm building today. It's supposed to rain some later, should I cancel or go ahead. I was just going to dump dry concrete in the hole and forget about it. Maybe sprinkle a little water on the top if it doesn't rain. I did this on a deck in the front I built 15 years ago and it still looks new. If this were elevated, I might reconsider but it's only a few feet off the ground. If I cover the post holes with plastic, do you think it'll keep it from getting too soupy? I'll wait if you think it best but I'm just anxious to get this done. One other thing, I went 32" deep, does anybody know if that's good enough for N.E. Ohio? Actually, I only went 24" deep on the ones in the front but the ground is much harder. Thanks for your advice, I appreciate forums like this. Dave

Hard packed ground freezs deeper than soft ground, so you would want to go deeper in those areas, not shallower. The concrete needs to be below the frost line, or it may heave the posts up.

In my clay I don't fool with concrete around wood, tends to just make rotten posts, but I know it's code in some places. I'd prefer the post bolted on top of the concrete, or the concrete well below the soil line - as I'm sure you are doing. Concrete surrounding the wood near the soil line rots quickly 'here'.

Well it stopped storming temporarily, time to get away from the computer between lightning strikes anyway. So Paul says harder ground freezes deeper? We just went through the winter from hell, if the 24" holes in the rock hard soil up front didn't heave the posts I guess the 32" deep holes in the soft soil will suffice? I maxed out the depth of the post hole digger, can't open the jaws any deeper unless I make the holes wider. One voice in my head says "do it right" the other one says "do it right now". And of course a third one is saying "take a nap". Ho-boy..

I think I listen to the nap talking too much. ;)

You'll end up fine I'm sure. :)

Looks like I might have to wait afterall. Our projected little shower just turned into a typhoon. Rain don't bother me, lightning does.
I guess I need to go 6" deeper anyway.
Thanks for your help folks.
Dave

Pour the dry crete in the hole and unless water would pool around the posts forget about it not setting up. The time to pour Concrete is when the ground is dry, when it gets wet it will pack around the post tight.
