My '02 Silverado is due a filter change. The Haynes manual says to put a pressure gauge on the test port. I don't want to invest in one unless I have to. Is the gauge necessary to relieve pressure on the line, or can I relieve it some other way?

Let the engine cool off first.

Use of a fuel pressure gage allows the gas to be released into container, instead of all over the top of the engine. Fire hazard aside, there's no reason you can't just depress the Schraeder valve.

Purchase the gauge as you will be needing it to verify when the pump has failed/is failing. All GM electric fuel pumps eventually do fail. Many cause phantom starting problems for months.

If it's got an easy to get to scrader style valve.. just bleed it from there with a small tool and a rag laid over it..

Pull the fuel pump fuse while the truck is running. This will take the pressure off the lines. Then change your filter, have some rags handy.

Thanks, all. I've done this job on an older model with TBI, but I thought there might be something different, maybe more pressure to deal with. It all sounds familiar.
