Had a problem lately with the main drive belt for the mower deck jumping off its own pulley down to the secondary drive belt pulley, both belts getting chewed up as a result. Unhooked the mower deck from the tractor to look for what might have caused it and saw that two of the mandrels had a bolt "missing", including the one with the double pulley. On closer inspection the tip of each bolt appeared to be still in its hole so the bolts must have broken. I figure that when the broken bolt worked its way out it must have gotten between the drive belt and the pulley and caused it to jump. Don't know for sure because the wife was using the mower at the time, but she did report a grinding noise just before the belts started smoking! Also, a few weeks ago I had to refit another one of these bolts that wouldn't tighten with a heli-coil (thanks for the tip) and use loctite to keep two of the blades from falling off. My question is: what's with these bolts - or for that matter the whole mower deck? It seems I've had many more problems with this craftsman mower than I should have.

I have the same mower. Got it about 3 years ago after we were burgralized. The guy stole my Murray. Man talk about stupid crooks. Now I wish he could come back and get that crapsman.

I bought a John Deere last year and my wife won't let me on it. It is twice the mower the crapsman is. Next year I hope to sell the crapsman and get another Deere.

Anyway, I have trouble with the crapsman's deck getting out of alinement and mowing closer on one side. Those spindles break to easy. I have replaced 4 of them so far. Never had that problem with any other mowers that I have had, even the old Murray.

I'm in upstate NY. I don't think a "forever" stamp will cover the shipping but appreciate the thought. Just ordered the parts from Sears website. $42 each for the belts and $2.90 each for the bolts. Plus $15.99 shipping/handling and NY sales tax.
Yikes! Bought two mandrels last year and two blades this spring. Probably cheaper to just hire someone to mow the lawn.

Can't really help ya w/your question. I have a Craftsman rider I got from my ma. Mowing along and the belt goes sprong. One of the mandrels was cracked, kinda hanging cock-eyed. Went to Sears parts, got 2 (proactive r&r on the 2nd shaft) along w/a belt.

When I took the 2nd side off, the inner bearings were seized. I also found it not so funny that there is no way to lube the mandrels, either the old part, nor the new. I guess they want ya comming back for more. Gotta love it....not. Good luck.....don t. .....
