Grainger catalog 397 has excellent information for choosing a winch. Included is a rolling weight chart and a cable drum wind chart. See page 2105.

Doing that would make the winch rate lower, not higher.

Bare drum pull is a lot higher than 2nd 3rd and so on wraps. You're giving up some leverage as the line stacks up and effectively increases the drum size. It will however increase your line speed accordingly.

My 8000# is down to about 5300# on the 3rd layer.

You misread my statement, many winches are rated as rolling weight or sliding weight and
a small winch (2000 lb) will pull an 8 or 10K
vehicle . That is the fallacy. You are absolutely right about the reduction in line pull as the drum fills.

Winches are normally rated by bare drum line,
but there are some new catalogs that give you
a number called rolling weight ( quite worthless).

To figure the pull needed to pull up a ramp,
divide the weight of the load by the sine of the
angle of the ramp and add some for friction losses.
