the master cylinder in my sidekick(95 model) is getting weak and not holding. has anyone ever rebuilt a master cylinder and what are the pitfalls? a rebuilt one is around $150 and right now that really stretches my budget. I don"t know if i can even get the parts at this time. thanks for any and all advise

As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a "rebuild" unless you have a way of restoring the bore that wears and gets scored. Putting new rubber seals in from a kit is just a patch job.

I have rebuilt some odd stuff by boring and sleeving to renew. That's common with expensive and rare collector's cars but is expensive.

With most newer stuff - you can buy brand new - usually made in China - cheaper than a so-called U.S. "rebuilt" part. And, some (not all) of the Chinese stuff is excellent quality.

Please don't fool around with it. It is a critical part of your braking system. Your life depends on it working properly. $150 is a very cheap price to pay to keep you out of an accident.

Befor I would pay that much, I would check out the local bone yard. That old you should not have to much prob. finding parts.I do this myself on a reg. basis. The local napa has at least 4 differnt prices and they are all higher than any one else with in a 60 mile radis of home, so for me it's the last place I go for anything. And yes I run older rigs all 6 of them.

I also find NAPA's prices to be high but when I order a part from NAPA I almost never have to return it because its the wrong part or fails quick.
I need to replace the heater blower in my truck, its failing again after only 3 years (the original went 9). Autozone has a lifetime replacement on it but its so danged hard to get out when I do it I'll pay the extra $$ to get a good one from NAPA.

Good on-line pricing... in reply to wfw, 06-20-2007 07:20:03
Since you didn't tell us what MODEL of Sidekick you have, we can only guess. rockauto.com has master cylinders for $57.00 to $125.00, depending upon the exact model you have.
