Optima battery is junk

At least my big buck yellow top is. It reads 10.4V's after less than a year and this means a dead cell. I put this in a project vehicle that is garaged kept so it wasn't even used hard. Should I trade it in for a blue or red top? Would a lead acid be better for a jeep that sits in the garage and is only used a toy?

If you use it as a Cranking,lighting ,ignition only battery, then the red top CLI may be a better choice. If you deep cycle the battery a lot with a high powered sound system or a winch, then the yellow top deep cycle battery may be the better choice. You should be getting exceptional battery life from an Optima battery unless you are not servicing it properly or have the wrong type for your intended use. I have never had an Optima red top fail, and my oldest one has been in continuous use in a HD 1 ton pickup for 16 years. The most damaging thing you can do to an Optima or other AGM battery is overcharge it and dry it out. Also do not allow an AGM or flooded cell battery for that matter to discharge and remain that way for an extended time which will cause severe sulphation.

I say keep away from Optima batteries. They have good marketing thats about it.

I used a dozen of those yellow tops in a project Hybrid vehicle some years back in Univeristy, and they were the worst perfroming battery we ever used, they were very finicky, and did not take well to being discharged past their nominal voltage and very quickly became junk.

You'll have better bang for the buck with any standard plate configuration deep cylcle battery on the market. And still you should use a battery tender if not using the vehicle on a weekly basis.
Also disconnect one terminal when not in use, it will prevent any "leaks" from draining the battery, as a well charged battery has a long shelf life as long as there is nothing draining it.

Everybody makes a bad thing once in awhile. I expect you've still got warrenty on it.
Yellow top is supposed to be very good for seasonal vehicles because its got a low self discharge rate. I'd probably still pull the ground while sitting though, clocks and whatnot will pull a battery down over time.

Contact Optima and see what they'll do for you. Their website says 12 month replacement and 12 month pro-rate. If its really less than a year old you should be all set.

When I worked in tech support for computers "less than a year old" usually ment at least two years old... Not that I think anything, I'm just sayin time gets away from us sometimes.

Update...
I took it back to the Interstate battery distributer where I bought it and they tested it. "Replace Battery". It was 12 months old and they gave me a new crappy Optimua yellow top. The dude that tested it said that he gets a ton of Optimas returned. I bought a float charger to keep the new one happy. We'll see.
