Power Mitre saws??

I am going to be getting a Power Mitre saw for the shop. I have looked at Lowes and Home Depot and see them there. I want a sliding saw so I can have the ability to cut larger framing wood 2"x 12" would be ideal. I see the ones in Lowes and Home Depot that can do this are in the $400- $500 price range . I just looked at Sears and found I can get a Craftsman saw to do the same job and its almost Half the Money ? Does any one have some input on the Craftsman saws? Theres nothing I hate more than getting a New Tool and having it be junk . If I need to get the More expensive one I will , but I also value the information we all share here. can anyone give me some input here? I am a Union Electrician , and I can tell you all about My tools , But I have not done much woodworking stuff and I have a few projects that will be great for a Power MItre saw in the shop. Thanks ....

I have used my 12" Delta Sidekick CMS for many years and like it very much. For installing wide pine flooring, though, its narrow cut wouldn't do, so I was forced to borrow my electrician's 12" Rigid Sliding CMS, a new model with laser and all. It was HEAVY to move around, but did an outstanding job.

In 1998 I bought the Sears Professional model, sliding compound, with the 8 1/2 inch blade. I've used this saw a ton and only had to replace the trigger. It's heavy but the cuts are excellent.

I can say I own the $200 sliding miter saw from Craftsman- Needed it to build a house, then nothing else afterwards, so I did not want to buy a $500 dewalt. The dust collection system is worthless and the "built in" laser is junk but the saw cuts well. It has plastic adjustment knobs that would not hold up to daily use I am sure, but it does cut. Even my wife can set the angle and cut. And I agree with the others, a 10" blade is a lot cheaper to replace then a 12", the blade that came with it is good quality. Normally I don"t buy cheap tools but because the limited use this one would have I think I found a bargain.

Get one with a 10" blade. the 12" blades are much more expensive and if you get a sliding one the 10" will cut almost anything you need.

When I went lookin at cordless drills , I discovered the craftsman versions were CHINESE. I have never bought a single item of Chinese origin that was satisfactory. Check out the lable on the box , thats the only way it could be that cheap.

Hi Dale,

Not all goods of Chinese manufacture are inferior. You can find quality products if you take the time to be discriminating. I've had good luck with their tea, soup bowls, vases, and incense. I'd avoid their tools and everything else, though.

Like any tool the cost gives you a number of things:

How much will you use it (will it wear out)?
How accurate do you need it (cutting trim and cabinets)?
How much do you want to pay?
Do you want it repairable or throw away?

I have an old Delta chop style. Heavy - nice boat anchor. I also bought a Harbor Freight slide compound. Took a little while to set it up for accurate cuts but works well and will more than likely will last my lifetime and it weighs about half of the Delta.

If you are using it for work or production, skip the Craftsman and cheapies, otherwise, give thought to actually how you will use it.

Can't say anything about the Craftsman slide compound mitre as I've never used one of theirs, but I've used the Dewalt and Bosch and both of them are great saws.
