I have not been satisfied with the leather treatments I have used on my boots. Waterproofers that don't waterproof, etc. Is there a waterproofer that works? Is it good for the leather? Is there a good leather preservative?

I use a product called Obenaufs heavy duty leather preservative, it was developed by an Idaho wildland firefighter for his own boots. it is formulated to resist caustic fire retardant chemicals, heat, water, and abrasion. seems to work pretty good on my boots.

I've always used Sno-seal, Beeswax etc, never with lasting results. With the purchase of my last pair of hunting boots about 7 yrs ago, I purchased Danner leather boots and their boot care system. It works- I now come home with dry feet and its easy to apply .Go to danner.com it should work with any leather boot.

The problem with treatments like neatsfoot oil or mink oil is that they soften the leather too much. I use Red Wing boot oil on my boots if that's what Red Wing recommends for the particular boot. After the oil soaks in, I'll follow up with Red Wing's greasy leather conditioner, which contains pine tar (from the smell).

For anything that I'm not sure what to use, I use Sno Seal. It is beeswax based and doesn't soften leather. You can use it on just about anything, I"ve even used it on suede hiking boots.

Got to go with the others and say SNO-SEAL. I started using it while in the Navy to keep the salt water from damaging my boots (always bought my own so maybe I cared a little more than some) and never had any complaints. Now I just wear the tan, 8", pigskin Wolverines with 200 grams of thinsulate. Granted being a mechanic they often get soaked with hydraulic oil but they are "factory" waterproofed and with the insulation to keep my feet warm in the winter and wick the sweat away in the summer my feet have never been happier or drier. To top it off their comfortable enough to wear out of the store and go right to work with very little wear in time and no resulting blisters.

If you find a waterproof treatment that is 100% and foolproof please let me know what it is. The best that I have used, and it works good for me is Mink Oil.

I have used Sno Seal that has bees wax and Sno Pruff also with good results. There are some weatherproofers that have silicone in them which should work well.

I use the beeswax based ones too. Reapply every year on winter boots and 6 mos on regular boots.
No such thing as forever waterproofing. Even rubber boots wear out someday.

I don't know of any 100% water proofer but a good start is Neatsfoot oil. As far as I know it can still be had.
