I've got a nice piece of 1" steel that I want to cut that has been in a fire so it's a little rusty but I'm having some real problems with the thing. Are there any kind of guidelines for gas pressure and steel thickness in oxy-acetylene cutting? I've cranked up the gas a little because it didn't seem like the preheat was heating the metal enough and it is getting through the piece but it's very sloppy and there is a lot of pooling of metal on the top of the plate. Any suggestions? I really appreciate it.

sounds like your tip is too small.i commonly cut 1"plate at 4to6psi acetylene and 25to30psi oxygen.if torch won't cut 1"plate clean try next size up tip.should be a # on the one you have.most welding supplys have a chart that will tell you what size tip you need.

Will I just cut some 1' plate i used a #2 tip w 25 psi oxygen and around 4 psi of acetylen, Use a straight edge, like angle iron clamped on to the work piece. Cutting speed is around 10 to 14 inches per minute. I can E mail you a chart if you wan't .

I'm not really sure what kind of tip we used but the acetylene was at 4 and the oxygen was higher than 25. What kind of metal were you cutting? I'm guessing that this stuff that we cut was hardened steel since it was taken off some equipment.
