Well, we installed the hydraulic timing chain tightener(Saturn mechanic said mine was junk?)...started up the engine and it's noisy as ever! I'm thinking it's lifters.

I plan on running an oil pressure test with a manual guage tomorrow. The engine has 276,000 miles on it. It has a twin overhead cam.

Are these lifters solid?

Are these engines known to develop NOISY lifters when they get high miles on them? These are about as noisy as I've heard. They are getting oil.

I did a bit of checking: Lifters sell for $25 each(16x25=$400)! A long block sells for $2400! I have not checked into a salvage engine yet.

A friend gave us this little car. I'm reminded again, there's no such thing as a free puppy!

Anyone have personal experience with these engines?

As always, I appreciate your responses.

Glenn F.

Anyone have experience with newer attic air conditioning? I know about one called SPACE PACK, but it is fairly expensive. Looking to cool about 1400 square feet in Michigan. Used to see split units in trailer parks but can't find any. Ideas or name brands or whate ver very welcome. Thanks.

He did only the tensioner? On these little engines when timing chain work is needed all the components need changed and the tensioner needs set and then the oil pressure can tighten it.

If the tensioner slides were worn away you also need to pull the engine pan and clean the debris out of the pan and the pump screen.

Saturn also has a update kit that will spray a little oil on the chain so the new one won't wear loose so quick.

The repairs will run more than the car is worth just look for something else and drive this until it blows

With all those miles I'd say a salvage yard engine makes the best choice BUT bear in mind it's difficult changing engines on front wheel drive cars.
Lots of luck! Bob
God Bless
