Can donating blood cause loss of health insurance? Donated blood today and was barraged with information sharing signatures. Are there hidden agendas for use against us when donating blood?

Used to donate blood when I lived in another locale. I am kind of turned off from doing it where I am now.

The local blood bank (not Red Cross) where I live now takes the blood you donate for free, and sells it to the hospitals/patients. They then turn around and buy high dollar real estate and pay their execs 6 figure salaries (many of the people gathering the donations are volunteers).

If I was going to give, I would probably go to the place that pays for your donation. I know, that sounds un-American, but I think the "free" place is just a scam.

My first experiences with donating blood were very memorable and undesirable. Then I started donating regularly and at one time was getting close to the three gallon mark I think. Then I was turned away for my pulse being too fast, then turned away becasue I had taken some cold meds, then a few more times, then a couple of VERY bad experiences, so I pretty much quit trying to do doing so. Sorry, but when you explain that you hate needles most of the time they are very careful and ensure things are done by the book. But after telling them this and then having them miss my vein, put it in twice, and a couple of other things, I decided that donating blood wasn't that good of a thing to do anymore on a regular basis. Last times I tried to donate blood were four years ago. Being in the service I've been to and lived in a couple of countries that makes me inelegible. If/when they decide that living in the UK, and being in a couple of other places isn't a reason to defer someone from donating blood I will have to think it over a while before I decide to donate. I have a fairly large vein that has been commented on how easy it is to hit, and it's been missed too many times the last few times I tried to donate blood.

P.S. During my eighty visits to the blood center, I detected no hidden agendas nor have there been any problems with my health insurance.

Received my ten gallon pin recently. There are many things that I could do to help society that do not get done. I really do not give much back but my blood is healthy and giving it does not require much effort. Some of the times I donated, it was not a positive experience, maybe because someone was having a bad day but that happens. One person posted on the donation board is at twenty-six gallons. I was going to stop at ten gallons but decided to continue for now.

You asked two questions; can donating blood cause loss of health insurance, and are there hidden agendas for use against us when donating blood?

The answer to the first is no, as far as I know.

But the second question, ah, that's the nastier one! In several ways there are agendas against blood donors. From finding yourself on various interesting lists for types of blood problems, to blood bank battles between the different agencies (with the Red Cross being the nastiest).

The Red Cross has also made life interesting for veterans like me who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Between the threats from them of criminal prosecution and lawsuits over our blood, and the entertaining red flags it's placed in our various medical records, lets just say I feel rather zesty about them.

The Red Cross will not even allow me to donate blood to myself for an surgury. Luckily, they are not the only blood bank in the game. Just the slimiest.

Reported to your health insurance - NO.

But when you donate blood it is test for many nasty diseases, TB, HIV etc... If the test comes back positive they want to share this information with other health agencies to prevent you from donating somewhere else (it happens). They will also share this information with county health departments.

I've never heard of donating blood having an adverse effect on health insurance. But then I don't get out much. On 9/11/2001 the afternoon of the WTC tragedy, my shift group and I were in the shift meeting with the boss. He had gotten a phone call stating that the Blood mobile was at another local company. We were between product runs and the plant was down. If we wanted to drive over to the other company and donate blood, he told us to stay on the clock and go do it. We could hold off start up until every one was done and back at work. 9 of us loaded into trucks and drove over. The receptionist at the blood mobile was very snotty to us and stated that they were done at four o'clock no exceptions! She got off her throne and went back into the blood mobile. Another young lady came out as we were leaving and handed out contact cards for us to contact the local red cross chapter to donate some other time. Many of the cards were promptly handed back, some with statements ranging from "kiss my a**" to "go to he**". A few days afterward, The Red Cross chapter contacted me at home with a song and dance routien, and I told them about the treatment the crew and I got that day. I was told that it was my fault for not having made the proper arrangements beforehand. Somehow proper previous arrangements are pretty hard to make in a national emergency and as far as I'm concerned, somebody shows up at my door volunteering to do something, they are treated in a cordual manner. After all 99+% of the people who volunteer to do something don't HAVE to. And will NOT fight to. The Red Cross never got a drop of blood from me after that.

I made it to the 6 gallon pin and then they tell me that is it due to some irregularities in liver related counts.

Giving blood is a great benefit to society, but like some hide for pain and danger, many will never donate.

Wait till someone you love needs it and the supply is too low.

I think it can come back and bite you in some ways. Last year my friend went to renew his driver's license and they asked if he wanted to be an organ donor. He replied that he would like to but he is diabetic. As soon as they heard that, they cut his license up in front of him. Now he has to get a medical clearance every year and retake the driver's test. Gawd knows what they'll do if your blood shows up with some bug in it.

I am approaching 4 gal. Nearly everytime I give, for about 3 days after I feel energized. I said something to my Dr about it and he said that it is common for men to feel that. Something about getting rid of some impurities.

Until recently I was employed by a health insurance company, and we would have the donation bus set up in the parking lot several times a year. Most health insurance companies encourage donations, so they are not going to penalize donors. Without donated blood at the hospitals, medical care would be even more expensive.

I have my 3 gallon pin, and I think some of my donation records got mislaid when our county changed blood centers.

Hi, One reason to give blood. On average, women live 7 years longer than men. Studies have shown that men giving blood reqularly will live as long as women. The theory revolves around the addition of new blood.

I think the corolary to that is that marriage doesn't make men live longer. it just feels that way..

Married men really don't live longer than single men. It just seems that way.

Hi Dan,

In line with what you say, I've heard that the body has no natural mechanism for eliminating iron which enters the system, and that high elemental iron levels in the blood are associated with cardiovascular problems in men. The only way to reduce blood iron levels is to lose blood and produce new blood. Donating blood is probably the least traumatic way to do that. If this is true it seems reasonable to think that the same thing might apply to other elemental metals.

I contracted infectious hepatitis (as it was called before they started lettering it) when I was in the army in Korea in 1969. The only lasting effect of it is a lifetime prohibition against donating blood. I worry about the metal concentration levels in my blood. Maybe I should see about getting some leeches.

All the best, Stan

Hi Stan, Have you heard of EDTA Chelation? EDTA removes metals and oxidation from your blood and tissues. It was developed pre WW2 by the germans as away to remove arsenic. Also cleans out calcium from cirulatory system. Easy to read about online. IV Chelation takes 2-3 hours. Cost can range from $45 -$175 per treatment. I've had three, and meet people who are avoding bypass and one guy who is keeping his stints from plugging. Does wonders for diabetics circilation also. EDTA Chelates every metal except Mercury. For Mercury, DMSA is given orally. Dan

Hmmmm..... I never thought of that. It is kinda like an oil change. I also believe that women live longer then men on average becasue men are usually the bread winners and have more stress on the job.

Huh?

Donating blood can save lives with minimal effort on the part of the donor. I was badly injured in an auto accident when 17 years old. It took the donations of many contributors to keep me alive, for which I am eternally grateful, and I now reciprocate as often as possible. As an aside, donating platelets, while a bit more time consuming, can also save lives and can be done more often because the blood is returned to your body.

I do the double shot platelets thing every time. Kind of weird how your chest gets cold and your lips get all tingly when they pump that cold plasma back in. :-)
