64-1/2 band saw problems

A guy gave me a Grizzly brand 64-1/2" metal cutting band saw. It needs some work....the upper cutting arm fell off yesterday - gotta weld the pivot lugs back on. Looks like they've been cracked for a while. Before I waste the time to do that, it's been about impossible to keep a blade on this saw - I've adjusted/tightened eveything I could find - no improvments. It just seems to decide it's time to spit the band saw off the pulleys. I spent more time putting the blade back on than trying to cut.
Anyone know of any fix for that problem? Is it just part of these saws? I spent 25 years working in various machine shops. I'm familure with large band saws. Anyone have any suggestions or is this just 100 pounds of scrap? A brand new one isn't but $250 and this thing is probably 30 years old.

Sometimes we overlook the obvious, though it sounds like the obvious was covered up in your case. My old Emerson started throwing blades, and I just lived with it for about a year until I finally took a minute to look it over. I discovered the adjusting screw was gone. The problem was right in front of me all that time. A couple of munutes later I had a square headed set screw in there and it hasn't thrown a blade since. Jim

Update - I spent some time with it this afternoon - I can see the tracking adjustment working and I've got the blade "dialed in" for the vertical position. It runs fine in the vertical position and cuts 1/8" stuff fine - even with a heavy hand feed. In horizontal position it slings the blade. I've got the "weight" of the arm set as light as it'll go, it's in the mid speed range with an 18 tpi blade. In the vertical position it also dumps the blade if I try to make a cut in the 4" channel that started this thread. I'm cutting from the back of the channel - the solid side. The blade guides are working and secure as are the guide "arms" that hold the guide bearings.
I'm about to declare this one as a one fishing trip boat anchor! It's gotta be something simple and obvious but I'm missing it.
Musta been that 25 years at the power company....I had good sense before that.....
Thanks for any ideas!

When I bought my used Dayton the guy had taken it all apart to paint it. It looked good but had to be all adjusted. You must know there is an adjusting screw that changes the "tilt" of the driven wheel. That might be your problem. HTH

I thought I'd posted an answer yesterday but I don't see it here. Anyway, late yesterday afternoo I had a few minutes so I started taking stuff apart - in particular the tilt adjustment. Considering some of the stuff the "handy work" I've seen done at the location this saw came from I should have looked.
Seems the tilt adjustmet screw wrung off at some time or another so instead of fixing it, the old guy who owned this saw (now deceased) just stuck another bolt in on top of what was left. Neat fix, huh? I got it drilled out, retapped and it seems to be working OK now. I welded the lugs back on yesterday - this afternoon I'll fix the wiring that ripped loose when the cutting head fell but I think it should work better now. Thanks for making me actually stop and think about how that adjustment actually works instead of me just assuming that it worked correctly!

These saws get a lot of bad press.Ive had mine for many years and wonder how I got along without it.The original was built by the Sprunger Co but I never had the 600.00 to buy one.Once the imports came in I bought one for 150.00.
