I have a Murray mower with a 6.5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine.

It's worked fine for two years. Then late last summer it quit starting. Last week I tore down the carb to checkit out. Looks like a mini version of the carb on my Ford 801! Only moving parts are the float and valve assembly.

Every thing looked very clean, but I cleaned it up anyway. I was able to spray carb cleaner through all the passages without any apparent obstructions.

There are no adjustments on this carb and it has a bulb primer.

I can get it to run for awhile if I spray starting fluid through the air cleaner. Hard on the engine!

I have a new plug, with a good hot spark. Fresh fuel. The bowl on the carb is filling up ok.

I'm out of ideas. Can anyone give me some advice?

TIA, John

Well, now I feel real dumb. I have a 5.5 Craftsman lawn mower that was given to me and don't know how to start it!! No, I am not blonde. It has an electric start, but the fella that gave it to me said that the battery was dead, and to pull start it. Ok, now that I have worn myself out, I figure there must be a choke somewhere? Please help me guys, oh, and yes there is new gas and oil in it.

try pumping the red prime button near the spark plug on the front of the mower 3 times.

I tore the carb down again and double checked that each passage was clean. Put it back together and filled the bowl. I then blew a little air in the port where the bulb puts pressure and gas came out the main port in the carb. Finished assembling and it started on the first pull!

Thanks to all.

John

John, I'm a little rusty but when you push primer you should see fuel in carb throat. If not, try loosing bowl nut. Over tight carb parts cause problems. Best wishes, Dennis.....

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but so far no go.
I took the primer bulb out and looked it over good, looked like brand new. But when I tried to put it back in, I managed to punch a big hole in it! So off to the B&S shop and had them get the nasty retainer around a new bulb seated.

They offered to take a look at the mower for $60 and might take a couple of weeks to get to it, parts extra of course!

One question about the bulb that the dealer could not answer. The original bulb had a small hole on the very end, looked factory made. Also has a screen inside where the bulb seats. So I think the hole should be there, some kind of air bleed maybe? The bulb that the dealer put on has no hole at all. Are these for a different type of carb?

So I guess I'll take it all apart and soak everything that looks like it can hanle it in the Berryman carb cleaner. Then make a small hole in the new bulb (like the original) and try again.

Any more suggestions for me (mama vetoed the cement truck)?

Thanks, John

The nut that holds the fuel bowl on, usally contains the main fuel jet. Easy to miss.

I think zbar has it, you're getting a massive vacuum leak thru that primer bulb, even if you only got a pin hole. Its pulling air instead of fuel. The Briggs book has replacement primer bulb rubber caps. John

John, you may want to check the primer bulb, somtimes they get cracked and won't work. I have a 3.5 tecumsa that done that, would start on either, but wouldnt run, replaced the primer and it works like new now. hope this helps.

Sounds like there's still an obstruction somewhere in the carb passages. I had the same problem with 2 weedeaters last week. I had to clean 1 of the carbs twice before it would run.

If you don't like the idea Tom gave, maybe asphalt or concrete is an option. :^)
