I've lost the indicator on my old Dialarc. It has the crank on the front, and a moving indicator on a cable mechanism. I'm going to repair it with new cable, pulleys and split shot. Is it accurate to hook the leads to my multifunction tool
to determine amperage, then place the split shot on the cable at that spot on the indicator? or is the amperage indicated calculated differently than the closed circuit because of the intended arc?

Although these are called "constant current" machines, that's a bit of a misnomer. At a given setting, the short-circuit current is going to be quite a bit higher than the arcing weld current.

The current setting is always going to be approximate. I'd try to find the middle of the travel for the current adjustment, set the indicator at the middle of its travel, lock down the split shot and call it good.
