My son and I are in the process of installing a new timing chain tightener on his '95 Saturn SL. I am a "shade tree" mechanic who has never used shop manuals. The local auto parts stores list a Chilton for $23 and a Haynes for $17. Which one would you get and why?

Also, in the event I don't get a manual, can someone tell me where the serpentine belt tightener is. I see what looks like the tightener in the center of the end of the engine. It has a 13mm bolt on it which I assume I must reverse....but it is very hard to get at.

Is short, if any one of you have done this job, would you briefly take me through the process, step by step? I'd sure appreciate it.

I typically figure things out as I go, but I guess I'd like a little guidance on this job.

Thanks, Glenn

I mostly end up with Haynes because they are all over the place and a bit cheaper.
For the money it is worth a stab in the dark.
I think that later on you will carry the Haynes book in one hand while going to the car thinking of the problem. I think you will forget your mechanics phone number.
That is how I started out. Father could not read so he bought a book that I would read and then he proceeded to take most anything apart.
I got to doing it later.

Haynes, all the way. Haynes does each job shown in the manual, while Chilton uses generic photos in many cases. I have many beater cars, a Haynes manual is always the first purchase.

Both manuals are take offs of the factory manual. Some items are not covered. The timing chain should be covered in both. There was a question about 95 Saturn at this forum below. Click and see if that information will help you.

I have always purchased the Chilton's manuals. I have had some of the Haynes. I'm not sure one is any better than the other.
