I am in the process of replacing the roof panel and other bodu parts on an old dodge pick up in many places there are"pinch welds" .What do ido about stoping new rust from starting between the two halves of the weld. Cold galvanizing might be an answer but they tell you not to paint over it. I would like to keep this truck for a long time as my son says that its probabily the last one that i will drive. any and all help is greatly appreciated come on guys sombody must have done this before

When I did this very thing to my old jeep, I used the weld-through primer...it worked very well and does have lots of zinc, kind of flows into the weld. Buy it at a paint and body supply place near you.

3M and others make what we in the trade call a weld thru primer. Well worth the expense.Should be avalable from your parts jobber, Ask them to put in their paint shaker and shake it for you , it falls out of suspension and you will be unhappy if your spray can wont empty or the nozzle plugs. Follow all the directions and you should have as corrosion resistant seam as possible. GH

I believe what Maark is referring to is 3M "weldable" or "weld-through" primer. It is meant to do what you want, but hold on to your hat when you buy a can--last one I bought was almost $25 for a spray can. Still, you're not using a lot so it goes a long way. It's a zinc-rich formula, so in effect you are cold-galvanizing the metal to be welded, and is meant to be painted over.

If you go to the parts house that sells paint materials, there is a spray can of stuff to spray between the joints to prevent future rusting specifically for that problem. I can't remember it's name right now. My materials are 3 miles away. You might go to your trustworty body shop and ask them, or I can look tomorroww on the name on the can.
