Deadbolt lock removal .....

I have two deadbolt lock assemblies in my front and back door that I want to remove and get them rekeyed to a new key. They are the type that has the key slot on the outside and also the inside. There are two small steel capping 'plugs' that must cover the installation screw heads that hold the whole thing in the door. These plugs are smooth and I don't know how they come out. Tapping them with a punch doesn't tilt them for removal, it only moves them in a bit more in depth. Obviously I need to remove the plugs to get the whole deadbolt assembly out of the door for the rekeying process. How do these little plugs come out?

Not with any of the deadbolts I've installed in the last 20 years.

Certain Shlage use brass buttons that go over the screw heads and the only way to get them out is to drill them out as far as I can see.

old art...are you thinking of a surface deadbolt that keys from both sides? I have "jimmy proof" lock like that. It needs a couple of parts but don't know the manufactuter. Sometime when I figure out how to post a picture here, maybe it can be identified.
It mounts on the inside and has a lever handle with both lock out and no lock features. I think it was made in the early '70s.
