Have used a torch very little, but saw a cutting torch in a garage sale for $75 and it looked in good condition. It did not have tanks. Started to buy it just to have in case I ever needed one. Then I thought, what about tanks? Do you buy the first set of tanks? What do they cost? And how much to refill? I did not buy the torch, but I am still interested. Can someone educate me here?

There are advantages and disadvantages to both owning and leasing tanks.

If you own them you will probably have to leave them at the gas house until they get around to filling them and then come back and pick them up. You will also be required to pay a nominal fee for testing and cleaning of the tanks on occasion. All gas distributors are required to fill any tank that is DOT approved unless it clearly belongs to another distributor.

Pricing will vary according to size of the cylinder and the price the distributor sells his product for. If you are in a fairly large community with more than one distributor you may be surprised at the difference in price ranges.

I have a lifetime lease on my cylinders that was transferred from the previous owner. All I do is pay for the gas and exchange the cylinders.

You can buy them or rent them. I think buying is cheaper in the long run. The large set is usually about $350 around here. I lucked up and found a dealer who lets me use the tanks for free. I just go back and swap out. I'd have to find my reciept to be sure, but I think it was somewhere around $50 to fill 'em.

I lease my tanks. I do a 5 year contract, both bottles for $130. When a tank is empty, you exchange it for a full one and pay for the contents. Acetylene is about $35, I don't have a receipt for Oxy, but it's probably similar. Many companies won't fill a bottle they don't own, and if you lease, you don't have to worry about getting them hydrotested, etc.
