What are "idler hubs" and "idler axles"?

Bob has it right. A idler hub has no brakes. Prices are often quoted on axles with idler hubs then you add X dollars to add your extras. This is done because you can often put several differant kinds of add on's on the same axle such as elect brakes; hyd brakes; air brakes (larger axles); free backing brakes; ect.

Heres some thing else they could be. An axle that only comes into play when the trailor is laoded to a point where the extra axle is need for the load. I have though about setting up one like that so when unloaded it runs on one axle then if loaded to a a little more a 2nd axle comes into play and then when loaded heavy a 3rd axle comes into play

Could it be referring to those "torsion"axles etc,which work like a spring loaded idler,rather than having conventional leaf or coil springs?

Take a quick look at the replacement axles available on the trailer parts site linked below.

The axles with out brake drums, or flanges for the brake backing plates to attach to are CLEARLY listed as "idler axles".
