O/T Mustang check engine light

My daughter has a 2000 V6 Mustang. The check engine light came on. We've got a checker and it came up with a bad exhaust gas recirculator pump. We replaced the pump which was bad. The light was still on. We disconnected the battery and then reconnected and the light was out. Now when we went for the inspection they told us it failed. The computer has to reset itself. Supposidly there is some drive cycle it has to go through. There is something you have to do to get it to reset itself. Does anyone know what specifically it is for fords? Thanks for any advice.

Why not just run it by a garage that can reset it for you? Seems that would be easier and much less headache than trying to do what worked 20 years ago.

later generation obdII systems will only clear a hard code with use of a scan tool. this has to do with backyarders and emmissions

What it most likely is, is the EGR differential pressure sensor. Ford has had much trouble with these. They are much easier to replace than the EGR valves themselves and usually cost about $50-60. The computer takes three start stop cycles to clear a code if the trouble has been corrected or you can usually clear it with whatever code reader you are using. The computer will light the CE light if it senses a fault for two consecutive start stop cycles. HTH, Older

I agree with Older. It is a DPFE sensor as I just replaced one on a Taurus. It was about $30 from Ford. I also bought one of the mini-scan tools for $70 that let me check and reset the computer. Total $100 Ford wanted $250 to replace the part alone. The code I got was P0401- low egr flow.

It may not have been the pump. Anything in the entire EGR system maybe setting the fault.

You can reset the computer with a scan tool or remove the power. You will still have to drive about 200-300 miles of city and highway driving for the computer to register enough information for the pollution test. I think the reason is that if you had a problem and then just reset the computer before the test - it would pass because of no history but the problem would still be there.

from what I have been able to piece together, the various OBD-II scans require various times and conditions to run including warmups/cooldowns

read a long involved procedure to speed things up but it still took over 8hours to get all the scans run

We had somewhat similar problem with a car we bought. Had been sitting and wouldn't crank. Battery was bad and we got a warranty replacement. Took car for emissions test, failed. Found out needs to drive forty miles +/- to get the computer to reset everything. Then we couldn't get the radio to reset. Found that by disconnecting battery cables and touching them together for about a minute then reconnect battery we could reset radio. This was on a Honda Accord (sorry about the import thing)

Translation...

The older 'puters would clear themselves when the battery was disconnected. The NEWER ones will clear only after "X" number of engine starts (probably quite a few) OR with a scan tool.
