Who do you think makes a gas pickup which has the highest tow capacity? What ever happened to the olf 454 & 460?

i had doge with the V-10 gas simpley loved it,Power was awsume,12 13 mile gal when cruising 8 9 pulling large trailer. Simpy loved that unit and would still be using it if had not losdt it in fire. Was totally destroyed in shop

My wife's Chevy HD2500 crewcab 4x4 has the 8.1 and Allison in it. Unbelievable truck, engine and transmission. Gets 9 mpg towing and 13 mpg otherwise. What a blast to drive! Power when you need it and smooth going down the road. She bought the gasser because she doesn't like the smell of diesel or the noise.

Seriously, anybody that hasn't driven a modern diesel (03-up) should take one for a test drive. Forget what you've heard about smell, cold starting, turbo lag, all that crap. It's not like that anymore. And when you figure out the total cost of owning a vehicle, it's a no-brainer if you drive more than 20,000/year or tow more than once a month. When they check off the diesel engine on the options list, there's a lot more included than just a different engine. The brakes, the cooling system, the electrical system, everything on it is designed for heavy duty use. Don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself.

The same HD brakes,suspension cooling, transmission & electrical all show up on gassers when the "towing" option is selected. Mine even has dual batteries.

Just checked the Dodge website and so no reference to a V10 in an 07 3500. Only two choices were the 6.7 Cummins and 5.7 Hemi.

They dropped the V10 in the Dodges a couple years ago because the vast majority of 2500/3500 trucks were bought mainly for the Cummins, which is also the only reason I would buy one.

The 1500 series Dodge SRT 10 with the 500 hp V10 and 6 speed manual was offered in 06 and possibly 05. seems I remember a magazine story that it was now going to be offered in the 4 dr crew cab, while the first ones were std cab only.
They were no good for towing, only for blowing off the other cars/pickups at the stoplight. Remember the comercials of all the other brand pickups running around the meighborhood with their doors blown off :-)

That's the one 500hp ! That's what I thought but was not sure.

Guy at work has a 99 reg. cab. 1500 Dodge with the 360 gas and he blows the doors off alot of stuff with it. It runs alot better than my 96,but mine is heavier too. 99 did have 30 ? more hp than 96.

Good subject. I have a 2001 2500 GM with an 8.1 and 5 spd allison. Excellent truck. It just hit 110,000 miles and I've had no trouble with the tranny or the engine. It has a 3.73 axle and I have towed a lot of heavy loads grossing out at 19,650 lbs. When you talk fuel this unit will get an easy 13.5 to 14 empty at 60 - 65 mph. Pulling is another story - about 9 - 10. If you compare this truck with the 8.1 and allison (new allison are six speed) and the 3.73 axle it's about even up on fuel with 6.0 ltr and std automatic and 4.10 axle. I'll take the 8.1 any day to the 6.0. I also have two Duramax units with allison. The diesel is the way to go if you drive enough miles to justify. The pulling capacity is much better then the 8.1 gas. Since I have the diesels I do not use the 8.1 any longer to tow. The 8.1 is a fun truck to drive as it will get moving very quickly. The 8.1 litre V-8 from GM is still available in the 3500 series trucks, but you'll find that most dealers will act like they don't want to sell one. It is a good engine but really sucks up gasoline. The Allison transmission comes with it and is prolly the best automatic available.

My brother does a lot of heavy towing and has owned most of the rigs at one time or another. Used to be a strict Ford man until the new ones kept breaking down. Currently, he swears by the Dodge gas V-10. I don't think you break even on the cost of the Cummins until the truck is about ten years old.

Super info guys (only the post about the 454/460s makes me feel so freakin' old:-) Sadly the world has passed my f350/460 by! It still has good power, but the ride of a springless buckboard!

The good news is - TIME TO GET A NEW ONE! I have heard so many good things about the Dodge Hemi, the Toyota & Nissans sound good too, But I've always been Ford/GM kind of guy...

Oh, I gotta get "gas" cause my wife can smell a single drop of diesel ten miles away! Why are women like that???

The old 454 & 460's are old crude antiques. The new engines have much better flowing ports, improved combustion chamber design and full computer control. They were hooked to 3 speed, non lockup auto transmissions of that era were not any better than the engines. An early/mid 2000's 300HP truck 6.0 can be boosted to 500+ HP with a few over the counter parts from GM & Summut Racing. The L79 head/manifold, a cam, computer tune and a cat back exhaust. The factory is getting almost that HP from stock 6.2 gassers in 2007.

I have had chevy 454 and ford 460 and the v10.They did a fine job.Buttttt the dodge hemi in my new truck '06 make these look like small blocks. I get around 13 miles pulling 30 foot trailer with 2 7000 pound tractors. This is the first time I owned a Dodge and I am very, very pleased with the performance. Just my two cents!

My cousin and I each own big block 1 ton 4x4's, Mine is a ford and his is a chevy, 460 and 454 engines. Well they are both turds! A competition between the two would only reveal two last place finishers. Honestly a good 350 chevy could leave both of them in the dust. They are so detuned and sluggish. They are both fuel injected but only about 230 hp. Neither has really lasted either. His has already been rebuilt at less than 100,000 miles and mine needs to be at about 120,000. I still use mine a lot for farm and lumber yard duty but it is far from a good old engine. Thing still looks new though and does all my farmwork. Can't justify ever getting any other truck for now.

When you get into that bracket of towing,your're at a point where there is no one answer.You need to sit down with a specialty(truck) seller and build a truck for the job.When Brand A says"We kin tow 12000lbs",they ain't lyin but you are prolly not gonna see"that truck" unless you order it with the"may require special equipment and options"packages.I'd like to see the mfgs put their pride and joy on a "towing/braking dyno as it's the initiation and ceasing of motion that is the hard part. Like the old adage says,"With the right gear train a washin machine motor can pull a freight train". It AIN'T all about HP and Torque.

Tough call between the V8 Chevy and the V10 Ford. Probably the Ford. But with today's diesels, hard to come up with a good reason why a person would choose gas unless they were being given free fuel.

With the price difference between gas and diesel trucks, you would have to save a lot of fuel to pay for the diesel engine. I bought a used V10, for about $10,000 less than a comparable diesel. I don't think the truck will last long enough to save that much fuel with only about 5mpg difference between them.

Don't try to justify a gas motor or diesel on initial cost alone. Being able to pull 15 or 20,000+ pounds with a pickup is enough reason to go for a diesel unless you are going to use it like a car.

Might be able to pull 15,000-20,000lbs. Problem is a light duty pickup does not have the suspension or brakes a real single or dual axle tractor does.

You make a valid point. I have noticed my neighbor farmers going to genuine single axle tractors and going way beyond what any type/brand of modified 2500-3500 truck can or ever will do...and getting good fuel economy at the same time because even 'heavy loads' are light pulls for a real tractor truck. Most of the tractor trucks I see are lightly used GMC's, they have Cummins and Cat engines in them, air brakes and 10 speed trannys. These single axle tractors can be had for cheap compared to a dually and will do 5x the work.
