Question for those in the know.

Have a welding machine that has been recently serviced and all the sheet metal has been removed. Letting it run tonight, and the amp/volt control (rheostat) on the backside of the control panel is awfully hot in my opinion. I've never noticed it before or paid any attention to it in the past. Is that something that normally puts out alot of heat (very hot to the touch)? It seems to be welding fine.

Note for buickanddeere- as far as I know, I haven't let the smoke out of it yet.

The rheostat is a variable resistor used to limit the current. In doing so it converts current to heat and dissipates it into the air. The cabinet sheet metal acts as a heat sink for the rheostat.With out the cabinet the rheostat has to dissapate the same amount of heat as if the cabinet was attached. More heat. Put the cabinet back on your welder.

I'd have never thought of that. Wasn't going to put sheet metal back on until I had this problem taken care of. Might have been there awhile.

It did seem to help, the dash is no longer hot while it runs. This dial is a "fine tune" control within a certain range. The side of the dial with the larger value than selected is still hot, but the lesser value side is cool to the touch. This was not the case before. I do not understand it, but thank you for the help.

Why would you use a welder without the cabinet?A 240 volt shock will change you mind,

I took the sheet metal off to do some repair work (replace magnetic switch behind control panel and fuel solenoid). I ran the welder to make sure everything was fine before I put the sheet metal back on. A 240 shock could change alot of things. It's back on now, and all seems well.

You might check and see if you have room for a fan inside the cabinet. Cooling can make a world of difference.
