The previous posts did'nt mention Echo saws. I assume this to mean noone thinks they are worthy of mentioning. I have my choice of gifts, a Echo or a Homelite, both 20in. Which one is better?

Thanks guys. I have chosen the Echo, it has been recommended far and above the Homelite. It's good enough to be given a saw, better when given a choice.

My uncle has been cutting wood his whole life. He is almost 83 and has tried them all, he says Stihl is the way to go.
My brother and I both have Stihl.

My Stihl 025 I bought last year new is a piece of junk. Wouldn't buy another. I've cut maybe 3 cords of wood with it. Seems as though the little 'e' clip that holds the clutch on migrated off the shaft. The little roller bearing disappeared and the clutch then ate its springs. Since I am homeowner, it was a little over a year old because I don't burn too much wood. Of course, the shop I bought it from gave me great service....to the tune of $97.00, for a saw I paid $267.00. So now for three cords of wood I have about $364 invested. I was so mad, I contacted Stihl and they made the dealer refund me about $70.00 which they at first refused. It took several months to clear this up. I'd be better off to buy cheaper and throw away sooner. Besides, the Stihls are very hard to start.

I have not owned an Echo chain saw, but I do have an Echo trimmer and it is considerably better quality than either the Homelite or McCullough trimmers I had before (each one only lasted one year). If their chain saws are anything like their string trimmers, pick the Echo. Homelite is basically cheaply made consumer junk.
Just my two cents worth.

Echo is a great saw. Personaly , I would buy an Echo over a Stihl. I've run many different saws over the years.I'm not downing Stihl , but I think Echo is a little better. And of course Husky is also a very good saw. The Husky is the only saw I've run that performs side by side with the Echo. I'm not shure about the up to date brand new Echo saws performance and features. But I have run the brand new up to date Husky. It's a nice saw. My choice would be Husky or Echo.

I agree. Echo is actually a pretty popular saw here in Maine. Lotta small time pulpwood cutters use 'em.

Unless the Homelite is 30 years old (personal thing), get the Echo. Echo is a high quality Japanese saw while Homelite has degenerated into something of an cheap store brand for Home Depot.

The biggest reason no one mentioned Echo is that it's not as widely known and Stihl or Husky. I'd say Echo's almost, or just as good as the two biggies.

I have seen some Poulan Pro saws around here. They don't cost quiet as much as some of the others but cost a lot more than than the "Wild Thing", ect (geeze what a concept!)

Any comments on quality of the Poulan?

I have a Poulan. It is a great saw. Totally dependable and runs great all the time. I have had no problems other than normal wearing out the chain and bar. If it ever gives up I will go out and buy another one in a heartbeat!! Bill

Have repaired saws for 20 years now. If you use it for a living, buy the Stihl, NO QUESTION! If buying for home use, Stihl consumer line still beats the others. If you dont care about having a dealer to help you, buy the chaepest thing you can find. It will last a couple of years and then you can buy another one.
I also cut my own 20 cord a year. Yes I use a Stihl.

I have an older Stihl 028 that works fine. I bought it 2nd hand, so don't know when it was made.

But I also have a 3-yr old Homelite (from Home Depot), Model 3314 (33cc, 14") that also works fine, and starts easier than the Stihl.
