I keep a 22 around to dispatch the occasional possum and skunk. Problem is, they come around only at night. Now, I'm an ok shot during the day, but at night, I just can't see the gun sights--not enough light. Anyone ever try painting the sights with some kind of glow in the dark paint? Any other ideas?
Any help will be much appreciated!!
Thanks much,
Marc

I bought a laser pointer from Harbor F. Clamped it to the side of the gun barrel and magazine with a couple of nylon zip-ties. the pointer had only a momentary switch so I used another zip-tie a little looser and slide it on the switch when I want the red dot. You can turn it on and look thru the sights and see where the red dot is from where you are pointing. Either rotate the pointer or shim it to get it to match. Still kinda helps to have some light to illuminate the whole animal and verify where the red dot is.

A cheap laser sight is just the ticket for ya.
The glow in the dark sights might work too, but laser will be almost fool proof once you get it zeroed in.

You should be be able to get a front sight (depending on the rifle) that has a vial filled with tritium gas. They need no light source to charge them and should glow for around 10 to 12 years.
try:

www.midwayusa.com
www.brownells.com

It could be a little pricey though, anywhere from 50 to 100 dollars.

The old tritium based paint that glowed all night long is long gone from the market in the name of radioactive safety. The modern ones get their energy from light exposure, and when dusk hunting, they lose their brightness at about the same rate as the sun goes down.

Since most critters really don't care about light, a flashlight held in the hand or taped under the barrel of the rifle works quite well. Turn it on to light up said critter, and shoot it.

Try the glow paint. Just a dab behind the front site and different color on either side of rear V if that is what you have. Laser or red dot scope also but finding mounts for the 22 could be problem. As for the paint ball gun try keeping the balls in the freezer prior to use. Stings a whole lot more! Had a cat get in the house. Too many places for it to hide in here. Finally caught it with a live trap but took 2 days and had to replace the bait. Bait in way back corner and trip set at lightest possible setting. Last I saw of cat it was running down the road to someplace unknown.

if you really wanna spank the critter, put lemon head candy in the paint ball gun. they are the same diameter as a paint ball, but hit a lot harder.

I have gotten a bit soft. For aggravating critters, not dangerous ones. I just pop em with a painball gun now, much more fun and you get to see how fast each one can run.

put a pan of cat food under the vapor lite. use some dry and canned food good and stinky. the critters will find it and then you can get a clean shot.

If ya got critters that are causing problems at night around the farm.. trap em' and then dispatch them during the day when you can see what you are shooting at...

.22 works fine for possum and coon around here..

A good light and a laser pointer on the gun. Be darned sure of what you shoot in the dark.

Thanks for the replies, guys--much appreciated!! I like the paintball idea--pop em and watch them run!

Soundguy, I'd like to live trap them--much less of a hassle. Only problem is we have 4 barn cats that would likely wander right into the trap. On the other hand, maybe getting trapped once would teach those cats to stay away from it?? I don't know... anyone have any experience with cats and live traps?

Getting back to shooting them with the 22, I can see the critters (and most everything else) just fine (yard lights). I try to keep them in the light and myself in darker areas so they don't spot me. So, it's seeing the sites on the gun thats the problem in the dark. I can't line up the back site with the front sight if I can't see them. I'll ask again, has anyone ever painted their gun sites with glow in the dark paint? I suppose I should just try it and see what happens!!

Oh ya, laser sights were mentioned--that sounds like a good idea. Are the cheap ones from Walmart fine for what I want to do? I'll have to look into that. That would be perfect at night if I could put a laser dot on those critters!!

Anyway, thanks again for your help with this, guys. As always, much appreciated!

I use a live trap to catch the coon and possum around here. We've got two outdoor cats, and each of them have been in the trap once. They learned pretty quick that it's not a place they want to go back in. I bait the trap with a little bit of dry cat food, a few pieces in front of the trap and then a few more way inside the trap beyond the trigger.

I've used florescent painted sites to good avail at dawn/dusk, red dot wide angle scope is also good in low light, that dot works good, any wide angle scope should help too. Years ago I bought a simmons 44 mag 3-10x44mm, from the sportsmans guide, then mounted it on a Springfield M1A, for like $80, really works great for el cheapo optics, the 3rd generation mount cost more than the scope ! I've taken some early and late in the day kills during deer season with that rifle, for what it is as far as optics go, sure works effectively when light is low. Not sure how large you could mount due to the circumference of a wide angle.

I'd imagine a laser sight would make a big difference though, they must be much more affordable now.

I've got to try the paint ball thing, used to partcipate in those games once in awhile, ought to work good to get the geese out of the corn and my clover patch and what the heck, I've always hated having to kill critters unless absolutely necessary, or it's getting prepared for food, nice alternative and I'll bet they run after a paintball sting.
