Craftsman Weed Whacker - won't stay running

My gas-powered Crafstman Weed whacker (maybe 5-10 yrs old, can't remember) won't stay running. I disassembled the carb, cleaned with carb cleaner, cleaned the fuel lines from the tank to the primer bulb and carb, drained old gas, put in fresh (at proper fuel-oil mix). I've adjusted the mixture and idle speed per the manual. It'll start up after a few pulls. I can run (at any throttle setting) for maybe 2-3 minutes, then it just dies. Won't start until it cools down (5-10 mins), then same thing. I'm ready to throw it in the trash and get a new one, but I hate to spend $100 when it might be something simple (and cheap) to fix. Or did I just exhaust the useful life of this little engine?

muffler filled full of crap and soot. look for a screen, also and remove this screen. it is a useless "spark arrestor"

IT'S a fricking weed whacker, why do they need spark arrestors?

You probably will get the best advice if you post on the Garden Tractor board on this site. However, the first thing to check is your muffler. Over time the oily exhaust can build up in the muffler/spark arrestor and restrict the flow of exhaust, causing the engine to stall. Take it off and clean it out real good and see what happens. Another possibility is that the ignition coil may be failing when it gets warm. Check to see if you're getting spark when it quits. If it's the ignition, you might as well buy a new weed whacker, unless you can find a used part easily. Hope this helps.
Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

Tommy,
Thanks for the reply. I'll check the muffler. I agree about the parts issue ($$$). I figure if I I have to buy anything for it , I would be better off investing it in a new machine. (Or be a good Father's Day present).

I have had the same type of experience with gas weed whackers and now I am looking at replacing mine with a DC powered rechargable. Does anyone have experience with these types?

thanks

Wrap the SOB around a tree or throw it out in my back yard and drown it. Can someone please send us some clear dry weather for awhile so we can work. The wheat crop is fried pretty much looks like and I have hay to cut and bale and some still to plant. We need some relief.

It's dry as a powder keg here in north alabama. And if that ain't bad enough were getting a lot of smoke from the fires 350 miles away. We need rain but not like you guys got it.
