Hi All,

I have a motor on a air compressor that has 3SPL in the rated horsepower column. Can someone tell me what this stands for? I bought it used, and the contacts in the controller are pretty burned up. The controller also says that 2 HP is the max it can handle, so that may explain the contacts being in the shape they're in(if this is a 3HP motor). Thanks,

Rob

Rob,
This is a marketing ploy used by the air compressor business to sell compressors to unsuspecting person that buy small compressors based on horsepower. Yes, the motor can deliver 3 hp but the compressor it is attached to cannot and will not delivery 3 horsepowers worth of compressed air. A good rule of thumb is that one should get 4 cfm of air at 90psi per horsepower. Divide the cfm of your machine by four and that will be the more correct horsepower. If the contacts are shot, either the compressor has been used a lot or the unloader is not working correctly or the machine has been run on too small of a supply line for power, or the contactor was too small.

Might not be much help because I haven't mees with motors in a long while. But, here it goes, you have a 2hp motor, the 3SPL just means 3hp special. They (compressor People) use a service factor of 1.1 on those motors where the motor can handle 3hp for a short period of time, i.e a compressor. With out any more information it would be hard to help you,(lots of models out there)but it does sound like it was really used.

Best wishes
Sam
