OT: Rats/poison/pets?

Since my old dog, Jake, died I have started experiencing rats in my machine shed. My new dog is just not as aggressive as Jake was, and my cats are apparently overfed. My question: If I poison the rats, do I pose a risk to my cats and dog in the unlikely event they should meet a rat and decide to eat it? I'm also using traps, but I want to launch a full-scale attack. I just don't want to poison my pets in the process. Has anyone out there had actual experience with poison when pets are around? The poison web sites seem to tiptoe around the subject without really answering the question. Thanks.

had rats once bad was eating the dog food and corn went and bought a large amount of rat posion had a blood hound that would eat anything was working on a tractor out away from the barn went back to get some tools the hound had eaten a 3 pound box called the vets was told to pour a bottle of poroxide down her throat and follow by a second what happened was not pretty but did the trick keep some on hand all the time now also followed up with a big shot of b12

Consensus seems to be dog and cats might or might not survive a poisoned rat, so I think I'll skip the poison. I'll just buy more rat traps. (Caught one overnight, I see.) Regarding food source, the only thing there is my dog's food (because she lives in a kennel attached to the machine shed and is kenneled when I'm not at home). She has been attacked a couple of times, once resulting in an eye infection. She's middle-aged and gentle so may be willing to avoid the rats unless she actually catches them in her food. I've considered getting a ratter-type dog. As far as my cats -- hmmmph! They're getting old (10, two at 11, two at 12), plus a couple were declawed strays when they showed up, so the lot of them is basically a non-threat to the rats. I just don't have the heart to make them go hungry. I may try the oatmeal and other ideas you folks have mentioned. Thanks for all the advice.

About the best I have found is the rolled Mothers oats, the kind you have for breakfast. Rats or mice like this and they eat it and it makes them thirsty and when they drink water the oats swell up, they can't throw up or pass it so they just die, no poison to be careful of.

Sounds kind of simple,why not feed your cats a little less, Hungry cats will hunt,for rats
and mice to supplement their diet.Lots of luck

A big rat is too much for most cats.Ive seen dogs kill rats but the rabies risk is there.A mix of plaster of paris and powdered sugar will get rats.A box trap works well.

I'd bet that if your dog chews on a poisoned rat, your dog has a chance of being poisoned.

Sometimes using rat poison invokes the "law of un-intended consequences." About 5 years ago, I was at Tractor Supply and they had a special on DeCon rat poison. I bought a case of it for very little. I took it home, and since I was in a hurry that evening, I simply put it in my shop and shut the door. My shop is in a pole barn that was once used for grain storage; it has a space between the inner and outer walls where the poles are.

Before I returned to the shop in a couple of days, some raccoons had found the DeCon, opened every bait tray, and eaten ALL of it. A couple of them were dead on the floor. A couple of others had crawled into the wall space and died. Did I mention that the temp was about 90 degrees? That place REEKED for two weeks!

The poison will kill your pets just as fast as the rats. DON'T do it. I don't know how these people have live pets after they consumed rat poison but i woudn't chance it. I have heard of useing a 50/50 mix of cornmeal and plaster of paris to kill rodents. It is non toxic so if your pets eat a rodent it should be safe.

I've had pretty good luck in my fabrication shop with de-con and a half bucket of anti-freeze. I set out the de-con and the next day or 2 I have 1/2 dozen rats floating in the bucket. Seems the de-con makes them real thirsty. Dogs, cats and barefeet are not allowed in the shop.

Now this may or not help because my dog is a indestructable pig but....when she was 4 or 5, my Dachshund Eva once got a hold of a pack of the blue rodent bait blocks (like a pound of the stuff) and ate it all. I was really expecting her to die. She didn"t show any illness of any sort. She was even there at suppertime to nose her bowl to show me it was time to eat. These blocks are responsible for the demise of many many rodents around my place from warf rats to field mice. So that being said and knowing the size of a rodents stomach from observing how much they sometimes take off these blocks, I would bet that the amount in their bodies if ingested by your dog would do no harm to the canine. I am not promising that, but my dog is 12 years old and still can eat everything she can get her mouth on living or dead. She is a machine.

My sister's golden retriever wasn't so tough but would eat anything. It didn't look before crossing the road either. $5000.00 in pins & plates. Anyways the fool (dog) scarfed down a block of rat poision after pushing a couple of pails and barrels out of the way. Several trips to the vet for B12 shots etc. Best laugh was when we were cutting up 10lb blocks of cheese for cheese trays. The kids let the mutt into the house. The dog grabbed about a 2 lb block of cheese off the table and made a run for it. Late that day we had the last laugh for hours. The dog was humped over and groaning/howling in misory due to being bunged up...

My Dad had a dog thet ate a blue rodent block, the dog got sick, but lived. But after that, he was crazy, he would turn on you in a moment.. We finally had go do away with the dog..

There is no food in my shop and rats still come in and chew up papers.I had a small repeater trap that caught 4 young rats.1 got eaten by the others.

I don't know if you can stand 2 dogs or not...but if you can, get a rat terrier...a male. Little bassards are death on rats and any other critter half again their size..hehe! If you have pet squirrels..you can kiss them goodbye too.

Yes, it'll damage your pets. If they get into the poison and eat it, they'll get poisoned. If they eat a rat that has been poisoned, same result. They'll need to be rushed into the vet for vitamin K...as a blood coagulant. That is, assuming you use Warfarin.

All I can tell you is that once my half grown bird dog tipped over a gallon can of that blood thinner type rat poison and ate half of it. I set it back on the shelf and danged if she didn't eat the other half the next night. Never bothered her that I could tell.
