My son was down today helping me clean up the place sometimes referred to as preprince Sleeping Beautys castle. Flower beds and odd spaces had gotten out of hand last summer when I was laid up with heart problems. His weed eater would only run about half speed. Gas was fresh and it might have been running rich. He said this was the first time he has had any problems and the machine is only a year or so old, Any suggestions for a cure ? Thanks BillD1

I gave mine away----for not starting or running poorly when it decided to. The guy I gave mine to said that all he did was clean the air filter----not sure about that, but he swears it"s still running.....

If it's the same as the one I had, don't bother trying to adjust the carb. The carb is factory set and you can't adjust them.

I had problems with the gear head on mine and after getting it fixed I sold it and bought a Stihl. Wasn't very happy with the Ryobi.

Ryobi hand tools seem OK but their lawn/garden stuff didn't impress me.

Also check and or replace the fuel filter on the end of the hose in the tank. It is about $6 for the tubing and filter kit.

Another vote for cleaning your spark arrestor. And, while you're at it, make sure that your carburetor adjustments are correct too.

I'll second the spark arrester, although if the guard has been removed the line can be too long, which will also bog it way down. If its smoking and running rich, i'll lean more to spark arrester. I believe these run on 50:1, and always use the pre measured oil bottles, with exactly one gallon of gas. I have a cheapo Ryobi, used extensively for 7 years with no trouble. In fact only changed the spark plug once.

Check the spark arrester screen in the muffler. Clean the carbon out of the screen and try that first.
