OT: Well water question.

I have a drilled well with submergible pump, county water is not available. My area is 14 inches low of rainfall and I have concerns of running out of water. I was told the well is about 175 foot deep. Is there a way I can find out what the water level is without removing the pump?

i agree with old . everybody else is making this to complicated. tie big nut to a string, drop it down the well until it hits the bottom. pull it out, and measure how much wet string you got . subtract that from 175.

Jiles, Contact the local Waterwell Company, or the Driller to do a Static level and Drawdown test on your well. It is done with a small probe on an a wire. There will be a small charge to ccome out and do it. OBTW...Do Not Be dropping ANYTHING down you well as someone below said that is a problem looking for a place to happen, Thats just plain loonicy.

175 feet is not very deep. Seems you might be able to just look down the casing with a flashlight. I've got three wells - all in the 200' range - and with all the water level (head) is only 20-30' feet down. Regardless, it has little to do with your actual GPM capacity. Here in New York, wells are usually drilled with dry spells in mind, and are not affected. I've never had one dry out. Maybe by you, things are done differently? We don't have water-well problems with drought - but do with new housing development. The more people that move in drill wells, the lower the water table gets. If you are concerned about a low water pump burn-out, installed a low-pressure safety switch. It will automatically shut down your well pump if you run out of water - and it will stay off until you manually reset it.

I suppose you could drop a nut into the well casing and use a stop watch to time how long until you hear the splash. Gravity accelerates the nut at 32'/sec.squared.

how much water is standing in the casing doesn't mean much . its how fast the water is comming in . can be determined by pumping until incomming water can't keep up with the pump . then throttle water flow with a valve until the water flow keeps up . then you measure amount water pumped in one minuite and that is your well capacity . to measure amount of water pumped use a five gal. bucket and time how much you get in one minuite .

I've used a roll of insulated wire and a multi-meter to check water level in my wells. The wire is #16, strip back the insulation and tie a small weight on the copper wire. I remove the vent from the cap and lower the wire into the well and have the meter set on the ohm scale,one probe to the end of the wire on the wire spool and the other probe to ground. When the weight touches water the meter display will change and that's where the water is. I then put a piece of black tape around the wire and pull it back out of the well. Then measure from the tape mark to the end of the wire. note: this won't work on a metal caseing but does fine on PVC case.

Pop the cover off then take a rope etc and lower it in to the well. When it hits water you then know hoq far up the water is. then subtract that number for 175 and you know about how much water you have to the bottom and that gives you an idea of how much water you have. When I had my well dug I had water at 19.5 foot from the top so that gave me 80 foot of water in the 6 inch caseing.
