How does one start an oil seal so as to get it installed correctly...without damaging it? Need special tools? Thanks.

Another good method if you have a press is to press them in. Sockets work very well to push against. Just go slow so you can feel it go straight.

Just start to tap it in and then tap in a circle or....if not too big, use a socket of about the same size. You'll know when they get cocked and you can back off and correct. Tap....don't grab a BFH and beat it.

Napa or other parts stores have seal drivers with a several diameters for different size seals. Its a lot easier to use than trying to start them by hand. Also less risk of ruining the seal when it gets cocked at an angle.
