O/T I Need A New Printer???

Well I just smoked another HP All in one printer, printer/scanner/copier, and need a new one. The "unit" power supply took a dump, not the convertor PS.

I'm tired of HP's nag "buy me" screens in there software so I wondering if there is a different brand that is as glitch free as HP but without the nag screens? I found that HP pages there website??? and ??? every month without your consent tieing up my dial-up band-width (only choice here). Ya, I'm running the latest CPU, 3.2ghz dual core, XP and 1gb ram and it don't help with lacking band width, well it does but just not with this problem.

Suggestions for a replacement "all in one"? Include the model number if you can.

Let me throw in about three cents here. I like to do real high end photography. I have a Cannon i9900 eight color printer. O MOMMA what prints. Go to Best Buy and what ever you get ...BUY the WARRENTY for about 70 bucks. AS long as you keep up that three year contract you never pay for a printer again! I have gone through five printers in seven years and only payed to upgrade or the $35.00 per year contract! GOOD DEAL!! Jeffcat

Hi T-Bone , Personally , I"m going to spend the money on a XEROX multi function machine when I"m ready. They may cost more , but I"m tired of slow copying of ink-jets. The middle of the line XEROX machines have what is called "Solid ink". A drum heats up , melting the ink. The paper rolls around the drum like a printing press , creating 30 pages per minute with the machine I"m interested in. It does printing , copying , scanning , and faxing. You can do multi tasking too. EXAMPLE: print and fax at the same time.

I took back a HP5510. Would not feed paper. When it did it sounded like most HP's where it makes a heck of alot of racket and shakes the whole table. I purchased a Epson cx4800 ~$99 and have been absolutely shickled titless. It is a sewing machine in comparison. I have had it more than the standard HP 12 month replacement and it is still performing well. The ink carts are replaced separately so if you need black, you only buy black. It did have an issue once, but we found that my son had run a piece of ribbon into it. Easy fix, but it did make for some interesting prints. HTH

I've had a HP 1320 for two years and it works perfectly (knock on wood). If you are looking for a color printer, take a look at the new Eastman Kodak printer. Quality of print is very good and ink is very economical compared to others.

If you absolutely don�t need a multifunction printer � don�t buy one. They typically have a lot more issues than anything else out there. You can probably use your multifunction printer without it being connected to the computer for copying and faxing. A few of our clients just �had to have� various flavors of multifunction printers. We make a lot of money off them for support than all of the other printers combined.

The most problem free printers we have found are the HP LaserJet 1320 � now the LaserJet P2015. You don�t need to install the software that comes with it � just load the driver when the system finds the new hardware.

Thanks for the welding advice � this is kind of like going from a 120V it just welds to a nice Lincoln or Miller.

Remove the software for the existing printer before removing it from the computer.

Hi T_Bone,

I don"t know if this holds true for all brands of printers but I recently bought 12 ink cartridges for my wife"s Epson printer on eBay for under $2 apiece, including shipping. The seller has a 99.9% positive feedback rating for almost 20,000 sales, so I wasn"t too worried about the transaction. Besides, the total cost was considerably less than the cost of a single Epson brand cartridge off the shelf. So far they seem to work fine.

Whatever you get, get something that is laser based, and not injet based.

I highly recommend Brother products, work good, last a long time..... Separate toner and drum, you don't have to buy it all just to add toner.

Hi T-Bone,

Based on Consumer Reports reviews I got "turned on" to the Cannon MultiPass series. I have an MP30 at home about 3 yrs now, relatively simple flat bed copier, scanner, printer. The only issue with that machine is the software - it was a "close out" model at the time, and I don't think it was completely compatible with Windows 2000 and none of the fixes worked. It still works but I need to make sure the printer is on before the computer is booted up, and don't have a bunch of the bells and whistles that I probably would not use anyway.

I got an upgraded version two years ago for my office MP730, about $250 at the time, flat copier with feed tray, printer, scanner, fax. No problem with the software with the MP730, and resonably easy to use.

Been very happy with it.

The canon Multipass I bought wouldn't even make the update from win 98 to XP

NO UPGRADE DRIVERS AVAILABLE / NO WORKAROUND EITHER!!

It now sits, and if the printheads aren't dried out when tried, gets some copy work.

What 'nag' screens do you see/ I have HP printers at home and work and can't say as i ever recall seeing any pop up 'nag' screens to buy anyting from them.??

Something to fact of updating the software. I clicked on it when I first got the printer and it was just trying to sell me upgrade software.

This is only a 18mth old unit, so maybe something new they were trying??

Couldn't tell ya.. I never instal anything but a printer driver... Not sure what 'software' you have that came with your printer.. But I've never had to install any HP software to get my printer to work... just drivers.. etc..

This HP required HP drivers embeded in the install software. If I remember correct the Toshibia XP version didn't come with USB drivers. When I installed the XP full version I think I just used the HP software drivers as I was in a hurry. Of course another roundtoit never came:)

Funny that this topic should come up right now. I just bought a Epson CX7000F mail order for very cheap. It has the flat bed scanner, fax, and all the things I want. ONLY- I did not read the reports on it until after I bought. All the reports on it say say away and that it is junk. Guess I will just have to wait and see. Any one useing one of them?

Before you buy any machine check and see what the toner capacity and price is for the cartridges it requires. Some of the machines require three or four different cartridges that only hold 4ml of toner and cost over twenty bucks apiece.

Just curious, what model HP was it. I bought a HP 6110 in '04 and it does the job, however, these certainly are not meant for mass printing, those little toner cartridges are where they get you. This one is here when you need it, but it only gets light usage, anything large goes to the print shop for now. That whole printer market certainly changed, the old HP 4P and 6P's were excellent quality and had higher capacity of toner, and even moderate or heavier usage was not a problem, seemed like a good value, lot different now. All in ones cover a lot of features for the money but one does have to question quality, toner arrangement, print quality and ease of use.

The thing I liked about this HP 6110 is that all the features are on the control panel, and are easy to find. One of my customers has a late '06 model Brother all in one and it was a royal pain just to find the lighten/darken feature, and many times you need to darken it up when trying to make a clear copy. I use that feature the most on the HP 6110. Even after looking in the instruction manual, it still was hard to figure out on that Brother model. Besides quality, I think user friendlness is important.

The software that came with mine did not have that adware in it, that must have been included later. It's not like you don't know where the HP web site is, yep, just another place they they try and flag you down, and slow your connection speed down.

Hi Bill,

It's a HPV 1350V. I don't think I have 150 copies/prints thru the unit in 18mths. I'm 40 miles RT to the nearest commerical copier so I need a copier here for what little I need one.

Ya I still have a couple oldies, dot matrix???, that still work great, but huge to pack around in a RV. And I like the USB port connection.

Dot matrix, theres an oldy but a goody! Definitely one those items, just like a quality tool that performs. I'd imagine there has to be something that meets your needs, the all in ones sure fit the bill, but just those darn toner cartridges costs, and small capacity, keeps my print jobs to a minimum, also just use black cartridge, on a lower quality print setting. If I was pushin a lot of paper out of my home office, I'd have to upgrade into something more cost effective.

I have HP all in one at home and an HP deskjet at work. While the printers work okay, their software is very large, cumbersome, and chews up a lot of resources and takes forever to boot up. Bought my sister in law the attached Lexmark which does everything for just over $100. She has about the same computer setup. Also, this Lexmark you can fax, do photos, sheet feed, and copy without the computer.

T Bone, my wife is an English teacher and the Lexmark printer brand is what she swears by. She prints study guides, test, runs off copys, and grade sheet data every day for 6 different classes. As long as you load the driver correctly (Don't ask) they will last a long time and do an excellent jod for you. She has a X4270 and X7350 in her classroom. At home we have an X7350 that will print a perfect picture, Faxes, document feeder and a flat bed scanner. Hope this helps.

Jerry, does that model have the flatbed scanner?

I am using a Lexmark X4270 printer, scanner, and fax, but it does not have the flatbed, and I miss it. Other than that it is a great machine.

Flatbed and sheet feed. Kinda nifty. A lot of plastic and somewhat noisey, but for home it looked pretty good. My son is a computer geek (network tech at a nuke plant) and swears by Lexmarks.

Lexmark sticks it to you for the ink though. They've been known to sue people for using offbrand ink...
I had one, the printer was cheap but the ink was killing us. Replaced it with a Canon (not an all in one) and its much better.

Thank you. I will consider it. We bought this one in a hurry when the original printer/scanner that came with the PC shot craps. It was a Lexmark also, but it had done a bunch of printing, so I really couldn't find fault with it other than it went down right when I needed it most. I didn't think I would ever use the fax feature on the new one, but it has become a very useful feature as well. They will all fail in time. Maybe a person should have a second unit on hand, ready to go, at all times.
