Radial Arm Saw Motor

I have Craftsman Radial 100 with a "capacitor start" motor that's acting up. If I go down when it's cold (ie sat for a log time) it will spin up but slowly. If I use it then shut it off and then go to turn it back on it it just sits there and hums, no movement. If I let it sit for a bit and turn it on it will spin up but then slowly stops and then hums.

I don't do a whole lot with electric motors so I don't know where to start. Any ideas?

Starting switch, might be electronic, but if its operated by a set of centrifugal weights, its bound up sawdust. Must operate freely.

Might be a good idea to clean out sawdust out of motor too.. bet you'll find a lot. mine was really packed in.

I cleaned it out when I replaced the bearings. It's amazing how the dust was packed in there. The good news is that a vac and an air compressor really did a good job cleaning all that old dust out.

This saw is in great shape, I spent a night getting everything trued back up. It has good power that first time then she just wont go.

Lets hope the cap fixes it.

Thanks guys, I just ordered one.

I just put bearings in it and was hoping that a cleaning would fix the problem. At least it's not a bad fix!

Look for drag marks on the armature when you take it apart.I worked on one that never ran right since new.The bearings were tight.Fellow who owned it chucked the armature in his lathe and found it out of round.He took a light cut and the motor ran better than new.Ive put new start capacitors in many of these motors.I worked on a Sears washing machine that had 8 parts missing from the spindle, came from the factory that way.
