Peerless trans lurching on Graveley

I just bought a used Graveley gear drive Pro 1548 walk behind.

It went great for 10 minues while I tried it - after my son cut for 15 or 20 more minutes, I took over again and the machine was slowing down then lurching as you are just mowing along slowly. You can see both drive shafts out of the tranny slow down, then lurch together. Trans seems to be making clunking noises. Only tried it in first gear, don't know about 2 through 5.

Any quick fixes or adjustments? How about possible bigger problems?

Trans is a Peerless, numbers on the tag are 700 079 on the top, 3056 2243 on the bottom of the tag.

Model of the mower is 988102

Serial No. 000650

Tim,
Get under the machine and check the drive belt. It sounds as though the drive belt might be slipping or the idler pulley is frozen in place and not keeping proper tension on the belt, thus explaining the lurching/jumping the machine is amking. This unit has a Peerless gear box that is pretty well bullet proof, two shafts and a chain in between. You might also check the couplers between the tranny output shaft and the drive shaft that the belt pulley is on. those can wear and will jump as they slip in the splines.

I would say fluid fluid. I would advise to inspect the old drained out for burning or sheer lack of it. I would pump that baby full of new and run it around and drain again and inspect.CSI on that. While you say one gear or another is this not hydrostatic? Peerless is really peerless but needs at all times clean fluid between their valves and wafers and stuff or they may go strange.

BTW this is a 2 year old machine with only 25 hours on it.

Supposedly the owner bought it for his large yard, didn't like mowing and has been having a service do it.

I believe that those transaxles even though they are gear driven, there is a chain inside that probably stretched and is now binding and jumping teeth on the sprocket.
