Favorite son was on his way home last night with my 92' f-150 with the 300 FI straight six engine.
He was on route 17 so he was moving about 70. The engine started losing power and he pulled off the side of the road. He claims it was still running and he shut it off. Time I got there and hour later, it turned over good and I could hear the fuel pump come up to pressure but it won't even try to start. Trying to troubleshoot a dead truck along 17 in Binghamton in the middle of the night is foolish so I dragged him home so he could leave for college this morning. Chris is going up to get the truck with a rollback.
This has had a new fuel filter and tune up in the past 3 months and was running good. I checked the obvious wire connections, all looked ok in the dark with a flashlight
The truck isn't here yet so I can't do a good look over on it. But has anybody else had this happen that might shed some light on the problem?

I tried a new TFI module today and it didn't make things better. fuel pressure is 45 psi.
No fire at the coil, coil tests good. all voltage and ohm tests are good. I'm taking the module back to Autozone to be tested. If its ok then I'll replace the PIP trigger after I make sure the spout connector is clean and making good connection. If these things don't solve the problem I'm going to convert a GM Delco HEI distributor to fit the Ford and get rid of the mickey mouse Ford junk. This is the first Ford I've ever owned and IT WILL BR THE LAST!

If the TFI module fails, most shops replace the pickup inside the distributor as well, at the same time. NOT a bad idea.

Also, make sure the distributor shaft is actually turning. The pin connecting the drive gear to the shaft has been known to shear.

Had my 93 f-150 302 die in the post office parking lot short time ago. Flat bed to home. Future sil builds race cars-diagnosed the problem as coil-replaced it, running great. Coil was a square thingy on the block, not round like the old days. Just my 2 cents of input. Good luck and keep us posted.

if it is getting fuel, air and ignition spark, then timing would be my guess. maybe the timing gear/chain slipped or broke?

First, check for spark. Could be a bad TFI module.

If spark is good, then check fuel pressure WITH A GAUGE, as the statement "I could hear the fuel pump come up to pressure" is MEANINGLESS.

I had a '91 Ford Tempo that would eat the spark module every couple years. It was cheap enough and easy to replace. Confirm there is or is not spark and I'd start with that guy if your rig has one. On my '91 it lived on the distributor body. Needed a special thin wall socket to get it off.

Dear Steve,
All no start diagnostics whether it be a Model T or a 2007 Crown Victoria should begin with the quality of SPARK. Buy an HEI spark tester. It looks like a spark plug with a clip on the side. They are $8 to 10. The spark MUST jump this gap! If it does then buy a fuel pressure tester(about $30). You should get about 40 to 45 # of pressure while cranking. If this is good, buy a noid light(less than $10) and hook it in the injector harness in place of the injector and it should BLINK while cranking. If you pass all these tests post back.
