OT: Backfiring Farm Truck

// I have a 1985 Chevy C60 / 6.0L, 366 CID / 4 Barrell Carb. While driving, she occationally backfires....when shuting her down, the idle appears a little high...after shut down, she lets out a loud backfire through the exhaust. Do you think the timing is off / is it a carburation problem / or something else? Suggestions are appreciated ...thanks //

I had a 1978 Chevy pickup that did that. Turned out to be the ignition module in the dist.

If it has that air pump on it like my 85 Chevy with
a 350, Try taking the belt off and put the belt behind the seat.

First thing I would is idle the motor a min. or so befor shut down and if that don't make any diff. I would check timming and make sure you have right idle rpm.

Check that the vacuum line is still attached to the "gulp valve" on the smog pump. If it still backfires during deceleration this "diverter valve" could be the culprit. It can blow the muffler wide open or completely off if left untended.

As everyone has said if and if your engine has a smog pump it could be the diverter valve on the smog pump.

Something else to check are the smog tubes going into exhaust manifolds because if there rotting away they will suck air when the engine is shut down and cause a backfire.

Check proper timing and idle speed.

I have owned many of this style of truck and they all did the same.

Just took the belt off and put it away.
