Reverseable motor

Is a variable speed, reversable motor available, or is there an older model made? I have heard of these motors. They have a lever on the brush end of the motor. Thank you if you have heard of such or know where one can be purchased.

Owen, check some of the ham radio or electronics web sites, bet you can find a replacement rectifier tube for that tester, without a mortgage.

Actually had one of those motors. They are long and heavy. It's not so much that the lever switched brush location but that there were switch plates that reversed the wiring. these were AC/DC. Very neat castings. A work.If i find one I'll let you know. What did that brass plate say...1911 or 21 can't remember.

What horsepower and what voltage are you looking for? You can get some variable speed drives that will allow you to run a three phase motor from single phase supply. Lots of used three phase out there and if it's not too big the drives are fairly reasonable.

If you are talking revesable electric motors , you can get them at www.surpluscenter.com they are out of Nebraska. They seem to have resonable prices.

Dad's magneto tester had one. It would run either direction with speed adjusted by a lever like you said.

My mag/gen tester has a motor that runs 0 - 8000 RPM either direction. It is a DC motor so that is easier to do than with an AC motor. It uses 5 rectifier tubes to get the DC voltage. Have not been able to use it since a third tube burned out. Too bad they didn't last longer than seventy years.

An "Allen", perhaps?

Search ebay and the 'Net for "tungar" (as the mercury vapor rectifiers were called), and you should have no trouble finding replacement rectifiers.
