Has anyone out there built a sliding barn door, hardware included? Looking for some ideas.

Lots. 11 foot x 16.5 foot were the big ones dad put up 43 years ago. One round roller is just starting to give a bit of trouble.

I built two for a round top building once. I used 2x2 square tubing for the frame and hi rib metal for the skin. I used trolley rollers and trolley track that a friend in the aircraft industry had on hand. Mine were two doors 7 1/2 wide by 13 1/2 high to fill a 14 x 13 1/2 opening. They were heavy but the trolley rollers and track handled them nicley. they slid with one finger.

I'll second the round track / roller system. Twice the quality of the square track.

I build my doors with 2x4 (2x^) verticals at each end with 2x4 (2x6) horizontals at 24" oc. I make the horizontals the same length as the opening width, which allows for a cam latch on the inside down through one of the girts.

Good luck,

Bill

I have built several out of 2x4 layed out flat with styrofoam insulation, metal on the outside and 1/4" OSB on th inside. Solid doors but heavy. Go with the round track with nylon rollers NOT the square track with the metal rollers.

Built some big ones once. Used 1 by 8 boards for frame, cross msmbers, diaganal etc. Gallon of Elmers glue and many nails to glue ply wood on the frame. Then sheet steel cover.

I put one in my pole barn when I built the machine shop. The opening is about 7 x 7 feet. Got the hardware at Tractor Supply Company. Made the rest out of 2x4's and aspenite. Had some High-R left over from another project, and used it to insulate the door. Was a fairly straightforward job, took the better part of a Saturday afternoon.
