I am replacing the 3 phase motor on my planer with a 5 Hp single phase motor. The plate says it draws 23 amps. I want a 10 ft. cord running from the planer to the 30 amp outlet. Will a 10/3 cord be heavy enough to run the 5 Hp motor or would 8/3 be better. Thanks..

If you have 3 phase power in your shop the question why replace a 3 phase motor with a single phase motor.

Bigger wire is always better, but doesn't always fit into the switch box, grommets, etc. 10 guage will be more than adequate for 23 amps.

The #10 is fine to run to the outlet provided the outlet itself is fed with at least #10 or larger as well.
