OT JD Kawasaki motor question

Have a Kawasaki FB460V 12.5hp gas engine on a JD 52" walk behind mower.
Not starting. Its blowing a flame out the carb. Is this a sign of a stuck valve? No noticable compression when placing finger over spark plug hole (plug pulled --pull starting engine).

Any thoughts? Pull the head off and see whats going on? Really don't want to spend to much $$ on this engine willing to pull head and wire brush off carbon to free valves after that? What else could it be (have not hit anything --timing should be on).

I would say the most common problem when valves start to sticking is old stale fuel being run through machine,the "varnish" deposits stick to valve stem, with only a few thousandths in clearance it dont take much to get them to sticking. I would also check your spark plug as it can cause this problem as well, I have seen many of this series Kaw's act up and simply be a plug.Also check your igniter located on right side of engine near dipstick tube, this controls spark and can also cause your complaint, good luck to you

Chris,

Just had the same trouble on mine, for the second time in about 4 years.

It seems that the intake valve - or seat - tends to wear not letting the valve close. I had to pull the valve and take off a few thousanths off the stem so it would close. Does require you to get a valve spring tool, but not too difficult a job. Of course the head has to come off to get the valve out....

I think the clearence is suppose to be .006

Stuck exhaust valve was the culprit. Cleaned the head and valves re-assembled ran pretty good. Once I get a valve/spring compressor I'll do a complete valve job.
