Craftsman cordless 18 volt drill just killed another battery. new batteries are almost what a new complete kit costs, and if the second battery dies im screwed. Do the other brands do this? I only paid about $100 for this kit 6 years ago, but I would gladly pay $200 for one that doesnt kill the expensive batteries so quick. I only use this one around the house, and run the battery clear down before charging. Should I buy another Craftsman, or are the DeWalt, Bosch or Porter Cable drills worth the extra cash? Thanks.

wasted time and gas in reply to oldrustycars, 05-15-2007 14:34:33
I'm just not a fan of warranty. Just how much do you save? Gas being what it is and time schedules always being tight who has the time to stand in line returning $100 item while loosing $300 worth of work. The losing deal here is the landfills. I just go and toss cause times too valuable. The corded drills and power tool are what I use mostly for that reason, dependability. I do own and use corded on occassions. That's one reason contractor hourly rates are high, Tools, Insurance Gas and Oh Yeah, Taxes Costs just keep goin' up. bjr

I've had an 18v Dewalt cordless for a number of years. I've gone through and killed 3 NiCd batteries (the 4th is still working, kinda). I was finally fed up when I tried one of these. Its a generic NiMH battery, and it works great. I highly recommend going the generic route, and so far as I can tell, the NiMH battery doesn't develop memory like the NiCds do. -stephen

Hi Stephen,

What am I missing?

Your link to Camera Battery.net shows the 18v original price of $59.99 and the "special" price to be $99.16. What's up with that?
So what did you actually pay?
Thanks,

Roger

Sorry, was trying to reply, but problems with internet service. Not sure what's up with that web page. I paid something like$50-55 for it, and I've been using it for well over a year. -stephen

Throw the Crapsman away and go buy a RIDGID lifetime service and LIFETIME BATTERYS FREE . That will take the sting out of it.

There was a discussion on here a while back and the brands that people here seemed to respect were Bosch, Millwaukee and Makita with some good comments about Rigid and Porter Cable. PC may be in the same family with Dewalt/Delta and some suspision was experessed. Royobi and Craftsman had their supporters too.

6 years is pretty good life for most any battery, even for the one in your car.
Face it, its a disposable society and you bought a cheap drill, how much should you really expect of it.

That said I've got a B&D Firestorm 12v that I've had for about 5 years now (maybe 6) that would work great if the charger hadn't quit. Replacements aren't all that expensive but my wife bought me a 19.2v Craftsman for Christmas which is way more powerful. So the B&D just sits. Maybe some day I'll fix the charger, its the wall wart thats broken not the charger base.

Interstate battery stores rebuild tool batteries at reasonable prices. They one the did for me has lasted well.

It may not be best for the NiCad to take the pack all the way down. In that case the weakest cell gets reverse charged. Just down to the point that it doesn't deliver good work.

I had to read your post twice, if I understand correct your battery is six years old. I started with Mill walken keys', then De Walts, and now Craftsman. If I get more than two and at best three years out of a battery I would do a comercial for them. We are very demanding of our cordless tools, and we are curently using Sears and very happy with them other than their sawsall.

Bought a DeWalt cordless last November; had to return it because the chuck was not straight, the drill bit wobbled all over the place.

Bought a DeWalt 3/8" electric drill in March; had to return it because the chuck was not straight, the drill bit wobbled worse than the first one I returned.

Put the drill bit in my old Harbor Freight $17 (on sale) 3/8" drill and the bit ran true as can be.

Ended up buying a 3/8" Hitachi drill that runs true.

I was pricing cordless drills recently when I had a bright (for me anyways) idea. Who determined that we all of a sudden can't live without cordless tools? I bought a Hitachi 3/8" drill 110v 7amp for less than 50 bucks with a case. Think about it for a minute, no heavy or dead batteries to deal with, keeps going all day long with just a simple cord. 95% of the time I'm working 10 feet or less from the nearest plug anyways. Just a thought. HTH Jf

Excellent point! I've gotten to where I always use a corded tool when in some proximity to an outlet, and even take my Honda generator in the back of the pickup out into the bush and use it to power corded tools. Why? Because the new gasoline is so cruddy that you need to use gas powered items often, to keep them from varnishing up. So I keep the generator ready to go by running (and refueling) it often, and am not wearing out expensive batteries in cordless tools. Also, someone was complaining on this board that they couldn't keep track of which "summer" engines he had treated with Stabil when winter came- someone else suggested just treating the whole can of gas when you get it, so you don't have to remember what you put in what.

I'm done with Stabil, Seafoam is a better stabilizer and helps with other things too, I put an ounce in ever can I buy. 2 ounces in the winter time.

can't use an electric drill with screws. pain in the arse. 99% usage of battery drills for me is screws. no drilling or nothing.

You better try out the warranty before 3 years is up. The warranty reads lifetime replacement --for the life of the battery which is 3 years. Been there and found out the hard way. Wouldn't go with a Rigid again. My next one is a Panasonic or Makita.

forget the makita. Go with the panasonic , and never look back. Panasonic is all I ever use anymore. I"ve boughten many 15.6 panasonics. Still in every day use. Panasonic just came out with new 14.4(?). Supposed to be smaller/lighter than 15.6. Yet , still have the same power as 15.6. A little pricy though.

You did not yell loud enough Ya need to learn from me , not only did they take care of the problem but in order to keep my business they took a 150 bucks off the 14 inch bandsaw plus anything i buy at Homer Depot for the rest of this year is 20% off . Beleive me i made a BIG STINK to the point that people were comming thru the door and turning around a leaving while i was expressen my displeasure over this drill .So as it stands for now this makes three free batterys plus the repair of the drill. And we did get it stright that IT IS A LIFE TIME WARRANTY. It is not nice to get me upset i was almost to the point of being mad.

DeWalt ain't worth spit any more, and I used to be a HUGE DeWalt fan.

Consider having your existing battery rebuilt. Half the price of new, and a guarantee. I had a couple of DW's done, I'm happy with the result.
