I need some help on how to wire my pickup so I can charge the battery in my slide in camper. It is an older camper that just had a battery in it but no way to charge it or someone took the stuff out. Do I need something in the wire to keep the battery in the pickup from draining I know you can buy the right thing I cant recall what it is called but they are about 150 bucks. Would a solinoid work? Thanks for any info.

I agree with the RV and Bus notion of using a Hi amp constant duty selenoid. I would put a manual switch in your cab to control the selenoid but have it deactivate whenever the key is off.
Also a fuse link at both ends of your charge wire from your truck selenoid to your auxilary battery. This would be added protection incase of a dead short. Also if you have a newer truck with a Ecm and fuel injection A surpressed relay or diode on a selenoid can eliminate voltage spikes when the selenoid opens up at shutdown.

Your alternative and the easiest is Franz's suggestion. For severe duty run the system.

Franz's diode suggestion will work. I'd add a fuse and an automotive taillight bulb in series for current limiting. If you ran the camper battery down to a low voltage, the light bulb would prevent more than about an amp of charge. Two bulbs in series/parallel would give you about two amps, etc.

Simplest way is to just install a diode in the wire for charging the camper battery, and connect it to one of the Ignition spares on the truck fuse block. That way, it will charge the camper battery when the truck is running, and the diode will prevent backflo of current from the camper to the truck.

fuse_____>|_____ _ camper battery
block diode

Go to any decent RV/trailer shop and they will sell you a "dual battery" kit to do what you want safely. It includes an isolator which is required. Be sure to follow the wiring instructions exactly.

My dad gave me a set up off of his truck when he no longer needed it. It's just a solenoid like you said. I know that they have two types continuous and momentary. The one you would want would probably be the continuous. But if I was you I would try and old Ford fenderwell type solenoid and see if it would hold up. It would be a cheap experiment.
Good Luck.

Just tried that experiment. they will not hold up to continuous operation. about 15 minutes max. ask napa for ford type continuous. don't have part number, but its a metal can and cost $26.00.

The RV dealer suggestion is a good one. Buses also have solenoids for continuous duty. The heater, defroster, pump for supplying the heaters, AC fans, and most of the lights are powered through this solenoid. When ignition switch is off, these units also have no power. Solenoid disconnects while cranking. Setup the solenoid to engage only when your truck is running, perhaps power the solenoid from the accessory position so that the feedback from the RV battery does not power the igniton (if gasoline engine).
