Maybe OT---Grass ONLY Killer

Does anyone know of a herbacide that will kill ONLY grass? I have a special situation with my landscaping that requires me to kill the grass around thrift and other type shubbery. I know that most people use a ground cover overlaid with rocks or chips but this is an existing bed on a hillside.

I've used Poast (sethoxydim) to kill grass around my tree farm. As another said, Fulisade is an option too.

poast is the only "grass only" labeled for tobacco that I know of. I use it on tobacco and my grandmother's flower beds. Good stuff, high doller but a little goes a long way.

"Over the Top" available from a good nursery is a selective herbicide for grasses and can be used on your flowerbeds with bedding plants, ornamentals, trees and shrubs or on your garden with vegetables. Just keep in mind... there could be plants in either that may be members of the grass family, such as Monkey Grass, Lirope, Pampas Grass, Corn even Palmtrees so make sure of what you have in there won't be affected as well as the grass you're tyring to kill.

Another more widely used agricultural selective for grasses is Poast.

I am guessing but those herbicides are probably selective for killing monocots (grass, corn, palms) vs. dicots (most flowering plants, trees, shurbs)

You can tell the difference from the leaves. Monocot leaf veins are parrallel to eachother and the axis of the leaf or leaflets. Dicot leaves have branched veins.

In similar situations, I use Roundup in a 3 gallon pump up sprayer and use a long handle metal paint shield to protect the favorable plants. Been doing this for a number of years in the veggie garden and also around plantings around the house that I'm too lazy to weedeat around. The shield I refer to had a wooden handle a few feet long. The shield is aluminum and about 1 foot by 3 feet and has a wing nut and bolt so the angle can be adjusted. Obviously you need both hands to do this so I put a strap on my sprayer to carry it on my shoulder. I have seen people use a piece of cardboard for the same effect but if the cardboard gets too wet and the chemical soaks through then you are rubbing the wet side of the cardboard on your favorable plants. Below is a link to one very similar to the one I use. Mine came from Home Depot quite a few years ago. I used it once and stored it and then discovered a new use for it.
